RT @CORDAP_: The last CORDAP event at the @UNOceanDecade Conference was about the Science Requirements to meet the Global Biodiversity Framework for corals.

We heard from Joe Appiott (CBD Secreatariat) on how the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework can be a new catalyst and opportunity for ocean science and on the importance of science based evidence and traditional knowledge.

@carlosduartephd (CORDAP /KAUST) discussed the uncertainty of coral reef futures under climate change and highlighted how failing to consider multiple models can lead to overly dramatic projections for coral loss worldwide. Our Executive Director also highlighted the need to upscale science and technology to redefine the future of corals.

Steven Thur (@NOAAResearch) explained how several indicators from NOAA’s Coral Reef Watch Program as well as in-water reports received from partners and users all over the world allowed to state that we are currently on the cusp of a global coral bleaching event.

The series of plenary sessions were followed by a panel discussion moderated by @danniwashington .

The invited panellists, Carlos Duarte (CORDAP/@KAUST_News), Michelle Devlin (@CefasGovUK ), Anderson Mayfield (CORDAP), Tom Dallison (@ICRI_Coral_Reef ) and Steven Thur (NOAA), and the public engaged in a lively discussion about the guidelines needed for successful coral restoration.
