Urban heat islands occur when natural land cover - such as vegetation - is replaced with buildings, roads, pavements and other surfaces that absorb and re-emit more of the Sun’s heat. ☀️

Urban areas become ‘islands’ of higher temperatures compared to outlying rural areas.

Land-surface temperature data is important to understand and monitor urban heat islands and to plan mitigation strategies to reduce the effects of this phenomenon.

For this, @esa's upcoming LSTM mission will provide land-surface temperatures at higher resolution.

RT @DroughtGov: Next week, the Central US looks dry and hot, dry and about normal, or dry and relatively cool. But dry. Much of the rest of the US remains hot, except the Northwest/Northeast, per @NOAA’s @NWSCPC.

Above-normal precip chances are favored in the East/West. drought.gov/forecasts
