The last sizable Pacific Sheath-tailed bat population in the region was recorded in Taveuni, Fiji at about 2,000 individuals, which had declined to just a couple hundred by 2019 – making this new roost a crucial stronghold for the species’ conservation in the Pacific.

How will you know if you’ve spotted this creature of the night? Well, its name says it all – just look for the tail! The Pacific Sheath-tailed bat – also known by their Fijian name bekabeka – is distinguishable by the small tail that pierces beyond their flight membrane.
