On Wednesdays we wear pink 💅

This Kompsat-2 satellite image features Uluru/Ayers Rock in the Australian outback.

Can you see the layers appearing to cut across the top of the formation? They were once horizontal!

How did that happen?

1️⃣ Hundreds of millions of years ago, this part of Australia was a shallow sea. Layers of sandstone settled on the ocean floor and were compressed.

2️⃣ These hardened, horizontal layers were uplifted and tilted almost 90º upwards to their present position.

3️⃣ The rock eroded slower than the surrounding softer deposits until the monolith stood high above an otherwise flat surface. esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Image…
