Unfortunately, it is rather cloudy, so the photos are not the best, but they still show how gigantic iceberg A23a is. It is so large, in fact, that I feel like it is not just an iceberg. Just compare it in size to the South Georgia islands! The iceberg, which is about the size of Puerto Rico, detached from from Antartica in 1986, but stayed mostly in place until 2020, where it started drifting and reached South Georgia in November 2023.

South Georgia has a large population of penguins as well as other sea birds that visit the area. Rats were previously a big problem for the local wildlife since they were an invasive specie brought to the island by humans. After a big eradication project, the island is now free of rats and the wildlife can thrive again.

Desværre er det ret overskyet, så billederne er ikke de bedste, men de viser stadig, hvor stort isbjerget A23a er. Det er så stort at jeg faktisk føler, det ikke bare er en isbjerg. Prøv lige at se det i forhold til South Georgia-øerne! Isbjerget, som er en anelse større end Fyn, løsrev sig fra Antarktis i 1986, men blev siddende i det Antarktiske hav indtil 2020, hvor det begyndte at drive og nåede South Georgia i november 2023.

South Georgia har en stor bestand af pingviner og andre søfugle, der besøger området. Rotter var tidligere et stort problem for den lokale dyreliv, da de var en invasiv art bragt til øen af mennesker. Efter et stort udryddelsesprojekt er øen nu fri for rotter, og dyrelivet på øen trives igen. #WhatYouLoveYouWillProtect #EarthFromSpace #Huginn
