During the April 8, 2024, total solar eclipse, citizen scientists across the country recorded bird sounds in their natural environment before, during, and after the total solar eclipse.

Together, participants:

- placed 383 audio recording devices
- recorded 45,960 total hours of audio
- collected 25 terabytes (!) of data

🌾Grasslands play a vital role in climate mitigation, yet they are often undervalued in carbon strategies. While forests store most of their carbon aboveground, grasslands retain nearly 90% of theirs belowground, making this carbon more stable and less vulnerable to loss during events like drought or fire.

Emerging research also suggests grasslands may store more carbon than currently estimated, particularly in deep soil layers.
