How Americans Were Forced to Turn In Their Gold

The official story: During the Great Depression, the U.S. government took the extraordinary step of requiring Americans to turn in their gold. This happened in the early 1930s as part of an effort to stabilize a collapsing economy and restore confidence in the banking system.

At the time, the United States was on the gold standard, meaning paper money could be exchanged for gold. As banks began to fail, many Americans lost trust in the system and started hoarding gold coins and bars. This drained gold from banks and made the economic crisis even worse.

In response, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 6102 on April 5, 1933. This order made it illegal for most Americans to own gold coins, gold bullion, or gold certificates. Citizens were required to turn in their gold to banks or the Federal Reserve by a set deadline.

In exchange, the government paid $20.67 per ounce in paper currency, which was the official price of gold at the time. While this sounded fair on paper, the government later raised the price of gold to $35 per ounce, effectively reducing the value of the dollar and increasing the government’s gold holdings.

Not all gold had to be surrendered. Americans were allowed to keep gold jewelry, gold used for industrial or dental purposes, and certain rare or collectible coins. Small amounts of gold were also permitted under specific limits.

Refusing to comply came with serious consequences. Violators faced fines of up to $10,000, up to 10 years in prison, or both. Although enforcement was uneven and prosecutions were relatively rare, the law was real and legally binding.

The main purpose of the gold confiscation was to stop hoarding, give the government control over the gold supply, and allow the dollar to be devalued. This helped raise prices and ease debt burdens during the Depression.

The ban on private gold ownership lasted for decades. It wasn’t until 1974, under President Gerald Ford, that Americans were once again allowed to legally own gold.

The gold confiscation of 1933 remains one of the most controversial economic actions in U.S. history—and a powerful reminder of how far governments may go during times of crisis.
