🇦🇺The Royal Australian Navy has armed its Hobart-class destroyer Sydney with an NSM (Naval Strike Missile) anti-ship missile. This was reported by The Defense Post with reference to the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, Vice Admiral Mark Hammond.
In January 2023, Australia signed a contract for the supply of the NSM anti-ship missile developed by the Norwegian company Konsberg.
The new ammunition should replace the outdated Harpoon missiles in the arsenal of Anzac-class frigates and Hobart-class destroyers.
“Several warships of both classes are already equipped with the missile,” said Vice Admiral Hammond. “Not all ships are rearmed yet, but we have begun the process.”
In addition, he added that American Tomahawk cruise missiles will enter service with Hobart-class destroyers this year as part of the implementation of a contract signed in 2023.
The deal involves the supply of more than 200 Tomahawks worth A$1.3 billion (US$833 million).
The NSM medium-range anti-ship missile is designed to destroy both surface and ground targets at a range of up to 200 km.
The low-flying missile is capable of skirting the landscape and uses passive systems to target its target. According to the developers, all this, combined with the use of advanced materials, makes it difficult for NSM to be detected by air defense systems.
Let us recall that the Australian government ordered three Hobart-class destroyers back in the fall of 2007. The ships were developed based on the F-100 class ship design of the Spanish company Navantia.
Several new destroyers strengthened the Australian fleet between 2017 and 2020. Sydney is the last of them.
