PhD student position in Atomistic modeling of materials for solar energy applications

The present project focuses on modeling of complex physical phenomena in emerging photoabsorbing materials for solar energy applications. It will focus on materials used in solar cells, such as halide perovskites, and in water-splitting photoelectrochemical cells, such as complex metal oxides. The nature, energetics and mobility of photogenerated holes and electrons will be studied, as well as their interactions with defects, surfaces and interfaces. The main goal of the project is to contribute to development of materials for improved solar devices. Advanced electronic structure methods, such as the GW approximation, hybrid functionals and ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations, as implemented in the ABINIT, QuantumEspresso or CP2K codes, will be used.

Information about the project
In this PhD student position, you will join the activities at the Division of Applied Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. Sustainable development is a central matter at the division where research is mainly directed with an applied focus and mostly concerns the development of new materials. In this specific project, so-called microcapsules are at focus. Microcapsules have shown an interesting application potential in the search for new fiber-based materials with antimicrobial properties. The ambition of this project is to develop biobased microcapsules to be adapted in cellulosic fibres from where triggered and sustained release of antimicrobial agents can be accomplished. A central objective is to characterize and map the fundamental aspects that are decisive in the formulation of microcapsules as well as their release of actives.

The position is in the context of the project “The role of brain network connectivity and machine learning for predicting disease worsening and cognitive impairment in patients with multiple sclerosis” in collaboration with the Institute of Experimental Neurology at Ospedale San Raffaele, supported by FISM, Fondazione Italiana Sclerosi Multipla onlus, gran n° cod. 2018/R/5 – cup F46C19000000001.
The project is focused on the development of machine learning algorithms and advanced computational methods for the analysis of brain imaging data recorded from multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. The interest is mainly in brain connectivity and how this relates with the disease. The aim is to support the prediction of long-term prognosis in MS. The research line will address problems such as the association of white-matter (dis)-connections with MS phenotypes, integration of functional and structural connectivity, definition of connectivity biomarkers used in long-term prediction of MS clinical worsening, etc.

Candidates for this position should have a Ph.D. in machine learning, pattern recognition, computer vision, mathematics or related areas. Research experience on the analysis of brain imaging data and brain connectivity will be privileged.
Strong programming skill is required.
Evidence of high quality research on the above-specified areas in the form of published papers in top conferences/journals and/or patents is mandatory.
Experience in the preparation and management of research proposals (EU, US, national) and a few years of postdoc experience, either in academia or industrial lab, will also be duly considered. You prepare a doctoral thesis in the field of family sociology, working on a project on siblings’ influence on their respective life courses (like brother, like sister ?).
You work in close collaboration with your supervisors and colleagues studying related research themes.
Project abstract

Whether and how family of origin influences the steps someone takes later in life, is a fundamental question in the social sciences. Intergenerational influences have already been studied in life events like leaving the parental home, union formation, and union dissolution. But previous research has only focused on how children imitate the family formation of their parents (i.e. intergenerational inheritance). In this project, we shift the focus from intergenerational to intragenerational influences in families. The proposed project studies whether and how siblings influence each other’s family life courses.

The project uses a sequential QUAN-qual mixed methods approach. For the QUAN-part, data from Belgian national registers are drawn from the Crossroads Bank for Social Security. This allows us to follow siblings through time and model their family dynamics with event history techniques. For the qual-part, data from in-depth interviews will be obtained in order to gain further insights in the objective and subjective factors that influence sibling effects on these three life course transitions. The project contributes to the existing state of the literature by investigating new directions through which family of origin influences family pathways.

Profile and requirements

You hold a master degree in social sciences, preferably in sociology, or economic sciences.
You can submit outstanding academic results.
You have an interest in family sociology and life course sociology.
You are capable of executing quantitative research.
You are capable of applying (or learning) advanced statistical analysis techniques (multi-level analysis, structural equation modeling).

Information about the research and the project

The position is with the Automatic Control group in the division of Systems and Control. Aiming for sustainable solutions, the group is involved in many research projects on energy savings using automatic control methods. In general the projects are carried out in collaboration with other research groups, institutes and industry.

The interest and use of battery based electric, hybrid electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, are steadily increasing and are gradually replacing the traditional combustion engine based vehicles due to environmental concern and legislation. In order to use the batteries optimally, and minimize the use of fuel and energy, advanced control algorithms are required in the battery management system (BMS). Its perhaps most important function is to estimate and predict the charge and discharge powers allowed in order to not prematurely age or damage the battery cells. Today, it is at best calculated using simple equivalent circuit models and fixed limits on voltage and current, which have been experimentally determined on beforehand. The actual limits for when the cells are getting damaged, however, are dependent on potentials and conditions inside the cell. These limits are in fact time-varying and depend on the operating conditions and the status (age) of the cell. The goal of this project is to develop a method for how to derive adaptive model based algorithms estimating these interior limits and also the aging properties of the cells. Using the algorithms the power capacity of the battery can then be better utilized; charging can be made faster, the life-time increased and the energy management in hybrid vehicles be improved.

The Automatic Control research group at the department has a well established research group in the area of electrified vehicles. This project is in part a collaboration between the Automatic Control research group at Chalmers and Volvo Cars, who will provide aged cells and data. The position is at Chalmers but you will be working in close cooperation with researchers, battery experts and developers at both Chalmers and Volvo Cars. There will also be a cooperation with Department of Physics who provides cell expertice, experimental facilities and will aid in the construction of test cells for experimental validation.

The Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU), within the University of Sussex Business School, is seeking to appoint two Research Fellows to join the Serendipity in Research and Innovation (SIRI) project team led by Dr Ohid Yaqub. SIRI will investigate the role, management and impact of serendipity on research performance, focusing on the desirability and feasibility of targeting research. The 5-year European Research Council funded project is in its first year, and was recently profiled in a lead editorial in Nature.

The Research Fellows will contribute to the development of the serendipity concept, mapping research activity using innovative techniques, data discovery and collection, database management, data processing and analysis, and data visualization. There is also scope for the Research Fellows to pursue their own interests. Essential criteria for the posts are:

A PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant discipline. Applications from the natural sciences and humanities, as well the social sciences are welcome.
Fluency in oral and written English.
Sympathy for mixed methods and interdisciplinary study.
Experience working with datasets.

The IRTG BrainAct is a joint doctoral research and training program of two German and three Canadian Universities: University of Marburg and University of Giessen on the German side and Queen’s University (Kingston), Western University (London), and York University (Toronto) on the Canadian side. The IRTG is situated at the Universities of Marburg and Giessen. A significant part of each research project (obligatory: 6 to 12 months) will be performed at the partner sites in Canada. Doctoral candidates will attend a structured doctoral program including seminar and lecture series and practical courses and will be jointly supervised by German and Canadian researchers. The key goal of the IRTG is to deepen the understanding of the neural systems and processes that underlie perception and action in everyday living. We apply a variety of research methods, such as tracking of eye- and hand-movements, virtual reality, neurophysiology, EEG, fMRI, and computational modeling.

We are seeking a post-doctoral scholar to work with a team of researchers from Oregon State
University on an NSF funded project: Assessing the influence of lithology on primary production in
mountain streams. This is a 22 month post-doctoral scholar position based at Oregon State
University. We seek a motivated and collaborative scientist with experience in fluvial
geomorphology and or stream metabolism modelling. The postdoctoral scholar will be expected
to lead efforts in quantifying the relationship between sediment transport and geomorphologic
setting and stream ecosystem processes (focusing on stream metabolism). As a member of the
project team she/he will be expected to contribute to other aspects of the project including, data
analysis, preparation of reports, scientific articles, and associated project deliverables. Applicants
must have defended their Ph.D. by the start of the appointment and must have completed their
Ph.D. no more than 5 years ago. The target start-date for this position is between June 1 and
August 1 2019.

PhD / Postdoc Position in NeuroComputing at TU Chemnitz (Germany)

A PostDoc or Ph.D. position is available at the Chemnitz University of Technology in the Department of Computer Science. The position is initially until 31.12.2021, starting as soon as possible. The research position is funded by the state of Saxony AI initiative.

The goal in our project is to develop brain-inspired cognitive architectures, particularly regarding recurrent dynamics in the prefrontal cortex and their shaping by reinforcement learning processes in the basal ganglia. The proposed neuro-computational approach will rely on reward-modulated recurrent networks (reservoir computing) using closed-loop interactions with the basal ganglia and the thalamus. The model will be tested against behavioral and physiological data and its functional properties will be compared to classical machine learning approaches.

The ideal candidate should have prior experience in neural networks, neurocomputing or computational neuroscience and sufficient programming experience. Very good English reading and speaking skills are required. German language skills are not required, but the willingness to learn German would be useful. Post-doc Position in Open-Ended Deep Reinforcement Learning

We have an opening for a post-doc position in my lab (http://fias.uni-frankfurt.de/en/neuro/triesch) at the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS) to study Open-Ended Deep Reinforcement Learning in simulated robots. We study systems that effectively learn to control their bodies and their environment by defining their own learning goals, practicing the skills for achieving these goals and setting themselves progressively harder goals. The team of Professor Manos Tsakiris who leads the ‘Body & Image in Arts & Science’ project (http://manostsakiris.com/index.php/research/bias/) at the The Warburg Institute (Part of the School of Advanced Study, University of London) are now recruiting for two full time, one year Research Assistant & Post-doctoral Researcher for the BIAS Project. “Body & Image in Arts & Sciences Project” (BIAS)

The BIAS project aims at addressing timely research questions at the intersection of sciences and humanities with a particular focus on the biological mechanisms and cultural factors that shape our relations to other people in a culture powered by images. In particular, the BIAS project is focused on how we bodily and cognitively respond to photojournalistic images of human suffering, the dehumanization of social groups in the media, bodily responses to works of art, and one important overarching theme is the role of such processes for socio-political behaviour. The research aims will be addressed by a range of research activities, including experimental work, seminars, workshops, conferences, and, involving a network of international research partners in humanities, philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience. Applicants for the Post-doctoral Position must have (or be expected to have submitted by the start date of the position) a PhD in Psychology, Neuroscience or a related discipline. Strong experience in the areas of social-affective neuroscience and/or political psychology is essential. Successful applicants will have strong skills in experimental design, programming, data management and statistics of behavioural and psychophysiological data. Experience with fMRI and/or EEG are highly desirable. The post-holder’s main duties and responsibilities will be to (i) initiate new lines of research as part of the BIAS project, (ii) design and implement online and lab-based experiments and (iii) contribute to the overall activities of the team.

The post-holder must also be prepared to acquire, with the guidance of the investigator, knowledge of theoretical issues in humanities, including history of culture and philosophy of mind/ perception. He/she will have access to a newly-formed psychophysiology laboratory at the Warburg Institute, as well as access to functional neuroimaging facilities at Royal Holloway, University of London and/or School of Advanced Study.

Applicants for the Research Assistant position must have academic qualifications (BSc, MSc in Psychology and/or Cognitive Neuroscience). He/she will have access to a newly-formed psychophysiology laboratory at the Warburg Institute, and will assist mainly with participant recruitment, data collection, data analysis and preparation of scientific publications, presentations and the digital dissemination of the key findings and activities.
