Postdoc Opening at Texas A&M University

We are conducting a search for a Postdoctoral Researcher to work with Shahin Shahrampour at Texas A&M University. The project is on large-scale statistical learning, a joint effort between the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISEN) and Texas A&M Institute of Data Science (TAMIDS). Applicants are expected to hold a Ph.D. degree in a closely related field to data science.



We are interested in the candidates in the broad area of machine learning algorithms. More specifically, the successful candidate will have a strong background in statistical learning theory and optimization, as well as programming skills in Matlab or Python. The position involves mathematical/algorithmic research in the area of data science, and the candidate is expected to contribute to the field of machine learning methodology.

PhD Position: The changing meaning of retirement - Deadline: 2 June

It has been frequently argued that babyboom cohorts have different needs and ambitions for retirement than earlier generations, and that they will even ‘redefine’ or ‘reinvent’ retirement. This PhD project will examine older adults’ pre-retirement preferences with respect to their future life, as well as their post retirement activities. The project will make use of the NIDI Pension Panel Survey (NPPS) in which more than 5.000, 60-plus older workers are followed in their transition to retirement.

This PhD project is part of the project “Ageing workers in an ageing society: Labour force transitions and work in late life” and is funded Netspar and NWO. The PhD project is based at NIDI in The Hague. The PhD candidate will write a dissertation, based on a set of research articles, publishable in international refereed journals.

Main tasks:

Writing academic articles.
Data analysis of the NIDI-Pension Panel Survey (NPPS).
Contribution to the dissemination of research findings.
Requirements
Completed a Research Master in one of the social sciences, or a comparable background.

Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD within the Department of Civil Engineering at Monash University.

The PhD Project

Prefabrication has the advantages of simplicity, speed and economy but has been inflexible to changes in design which is a primary reason behind its limited market share in the construction industry. To tackle this drawback, there is need for research to develop a Robotic Prefabrication System (RPS) which employs a new concept towards automatic construction of a prefabricated structure. The RPS will consist of a software module and a hardware module. First, the software employs the 3D model of a prefabricated structure as input, and returns motor control command output to the hardware. There are numerous underlying algorithms developed in the software module. For example, a novel algorithm will computes the optimal fabrication sequence to transform one model into another according to the differences identified. Meanwhile, the hardware module takes the motor control commands as input and executes the appropriate assembly/disassembly operations, and returns the desired structure in real-time.

Validation tests on lab-scaled prefabricated structures will demonstrate the ability of the system to successfully generate desired fabrication sequences and perform all assembly operations with acceptable placement precision.

This PhD will leverage the latest technologies, data science and AI in the development of new building processes and techniques. This will enable the application of robotics to optimise all phases of building delivery.

The Opportunity

Scholarship covering tuition fees and providing a tax-free stipend (approximately $29,000/year) for 3 years is potentially available for either local or international students. There is potential for successful applicants to earn around $3,000 per annum through assisting in undergraduate teaching. Students are given financial support to attend an international conference during their
PhD.

Selection Criteria

The student will need to meet the following criteria:

Masters or Bachelor (H1 Honours) in Engineering (majoring in Civil, Mechanical, Electronics, or Aerospace Engineering, etc.);
An excellent academic record (GPA>90%);
Excellent English – Academic IELTS: minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no skill
less than 6.0; and
Proficiency in the Robot Operating System (ROS)

PhD student position in nanomedicine

A four-year PhD position in nanomedical research is available in a new junior group embedded in the Division of Chemical Biology and the Excellence Initiative Nano at Chalmers.
Disease-triggered drug-delivery vehicles can be composed of responsive polymeric materials that undergo programmed changes in their physicochemical properties (e.g. chain cleavage or solubility switch) upon exposure to the biochemistry of inflammation. To improve drug-delivery for these conditions, our group explores avenues such as reduced dosage, locally triggered on-time delivery, and functionality, or include diagnostics to monitor therapeutic response. We use established anti-inflammatory drugs and novel bioactive lipids for our purposes, and monitor drug effects in in vitro/ex vivo systems including tools such as lipidomics.

PhD student position in Atomistic modeling of materials for solar energy applications

The present project focuses on modeling of complex physical phenomena in emerging photoabsorbing materials for solar energy applications. It will focus on materials used in solar cells, such as halide perovskites, and in water-splitting photoelectrochemical cells, such as complex metal oxides. The nature, energetics and mobility of photogenerated holes and electrons will be studied, as well as their interactions with defects, surfaces and interfaces. The main goal of the project is to contribute to development of materials for improved solar devices. Advanced electronic structure methods, such as the GW approximation, hybrid functionals and ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations, as implemented in the ABINIT, QuantumEspresso or CP2K codes, will be used.

Information about the project
In this PhD student position, you will join the activities at the Division of Applied Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. Sustainable development is a central matter at the division where research is mainly directed with an applied focus and mostly concerns the development of new materials. In this specific project, so-called microcapsules are at focus. Microcapsules have shown an interesting application potential in the search for new fiber-based materials with antimicrobial properties. The ambition of this project is to develop biobased microcapsules to be adapted in cellulosic fibres from where triggered and sustained release of antimicrobial agents can be accomplished. A central objective is to characterize and map the fundamental aspects that are decisive in the formulation of microcapsules as well as their release of actives.

KDD 2019 invites applications for Startup Research Awards. Interested, eligible individuals should apply by June 15, 2019, sending the following information to startupaward2019@kdd.org:
Awards will be granted on a competitive basis, decided by the Startup Research Awards Committee. The award will cover the conference registration fee (early bird level) and up to US$ 2300 for travel and lodging.

1. Applicant’s Name, affiliated company, position in the company, applicant’s location
2. A letter, on the company letterhead, signed by the company’s CEO, giving basic information about the company (date of incorporation, number of employees, total funding - in US$ - secured from start to now.) Only early stage companies with total funding not exceeding US$10M are eligible.
3. A brief description of the accepted works in KDD 2019, and other research achievements by the company.
4. A link to the company’s website.

The Startup Research Awards Committee will inform the applicants by email about its decisions by June 22, 2019. Successful applicants will be expected to front the cost (both registration and travel), and will be subsequently reimbursed the cost up to the amount of the award.

Postdoctoral position in Machine Learning applied to Neuroimaging and Brain Connectivity

The Pattern Analysis and Computer Vision Research Line (https://pavis.iit.it/) at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia is looking for a highly motivated post-doc with background in machine learning applied to neuroimaging data (fMRI, dTI, MEG, EEG, etc.). The position is in the context of the project “The role of brain network connectivity and machine learning for predicting disease worsening and cognitive impairment in patients with multiple sclerosis” in collaboration with the Institute of Experimental Neurology at Ospedale San Raffaele, supported by FISM, Fondazione Italiana Sclerosi Multipla onlus, gran n° cod. 2018/R/5 – cup F46C19000000001.
The project is focused on the development of machine learning algorithms and advanced computational methods for the analysis of brain imaging data recorded from multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. The interest is mainly in brain connectivity and how this relates with the disease. The aim is to support the prediction of long-term prognosis in MS. The research line will address problems such as the association of white-matter (dis)-connections with MS phenotypes, integration of functional and structural connectivity, definition of connectivity biomarkers used in long-term prediction of MS clinical worsening, etc.

Candidates for this position should have a Ph.D. in machine learning, pattern recognition, computer vision, mathematics or related areas. Research experience on the analysis of brain imaging data and brain connectivity will be privileged.
Strong programming skill is required.
Evidence of high quality research on the above-specified areas in the form of published papers in top conferences/journals and/or patents is mandatory.
Experience in the preparation and management of research proposals (EU, US, national) and a few years of postdoc experience, either in academia or industrial lab, will also be duly considered. The scientist is expected to publish his/her research results in leading international journals and conferences. She/he is also expected to contribute to the set-up of new project proposals, participate in funding activities, helping with the supervision of PhD candidates and collaborate with scientists from different disciplines.
Salary will be in line with international standard. The working location is Genova, Italy.
