PhD Position in Heart Rate Variability, Dynamics and Control During Exercise (SNSF)
Project Title: Heart Rate Variability, Dynamics and Control During Exercise
Funded by: Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)
Principal Investigator: Prof. Dr. Kenneth J. Hunt (kenneth.hunt@bfh.ch)
Start date: 1 October 2019 (or by negotiation)
Duration: 4 years
This project will investigate the natural, physiological phenomenon known as heart rate variability (HRV). HRV arises from the regulatory activities of the autonomic nervous system which causes fluctuations in heart rate (HR) over short and long timescales. It is important to better understand the characteristics of HRV, and to develop accurate and robust systems for automatic control of HR for various exercise modalities such as cycle ergometry and treadmill exercise. This is because HR is a convenient-to-use variable that is widely adopted to characterise exercise intensity and to prescribe exercise-training and rehabilitation programmes.
The principal aim of the project is to elucidate and better understand the characteristics of HRV during prolonged exercise and to use this knowledge to optimise the design of automatic HR control systems. To achieve this aim, we will investigate changes in HRV in relation to exercise intensity and duration, we will develop dynamics models and controllers for HR, and we will carry out a clinical feasibility study of HR control in patients with neurological impairment following stroke.

We take inspiration from neuroscience to develop massively parallel, event-based, and power-efficient algorithms for machine learning, inference and control.
Possible project topics include:
* Bio-inspired signal processing and pattern recognition for chemical sensing,
* Gas-based navigation for robots,
* Deep learning for fragrance and aroma discovery,
* Computing on neuromorphic hardware.
Candidates with diverse skill profile are most welcome, e.g. with a background in:
* Machine learning and AI, or
* Neuroscience and neural computation, or
* Signal processing and computer engineering, or
* Fragrance/aroma chemistry and computational chemistry methods .
Successful candidates are eligible for a research studentship award from the University (GBP 15,009 per annum bursary plus payment of the student fees). Applicants from outside the UK or EU are eligible, too.

Seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher or Research Scientist
Laboratory
Materials Dynamics Laboratory
Photon Science Research Division
RIKEN SPring-8 Center
(Associate Chief Scientist: Alfred Baron)
Research Field
The focus of the laboratory is the dynamics of materials on meV energy scales (THz frequencies) and atomic length scales, as measured using inelastic x-ray scattering. The largest project of the lab is the design, construction and commissioning of a new and uniquely powerful beamline for inelastic x-ray scattering. It should provide unprecedented capability to measure both atomic dynamics and electronic excitations with high resolution. Other projects include investigation of phonons in multiferroics, correlated-electron materials, especially superconductors, liquid dynamics, elastic constants of materials under pressure, and development of instrumentation, especially x-ray optics.
Job title and Job description
Job Title: Postdoctoral Researcher or Research Scientist (one position)
Task content: The Laboratory has recently commissioned world-leading spectrometers for measuring atomic and electronic dynamics (~1 and ~30 meV resolution, respectively). Potential research directions include investigation of magneto-elastic coupling, correlated materials, ferroelectrics, and, possibly, liquid dynamics. Extensive off-line facilities are available, in addition to the facilities of a premier operating synchrotron (SPring-8) and free-electron laser (SACLA).

Direct Doctorate Fellowship in Yeast Molecular Genetics
A Direct Doctorate (PhD) scholarship funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) is available at the Bioenergy Research Institute (IPBEN) affiliated with Rio Claro Biosciences Institute of São Paulo State University (IBRC-UNESP) under the mentoring of Dr. Ana Paula Jacobus (www.yeastevolution.com).
The selected candidate will develope research in the context of the Young Researcher project “Collaboration Network: Modern Genetic Approaches to Enhance Yeast Tolerance to Enriched Lignocellulosic Hydrolysates”. This project raises the question of how tolerance to lignocellulosic hydrolysate inhibitors used in the production of second generation ethanol, can be improved in yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae by the use of modern tools of molecular genetics and synthetic biology.
To address this important issue, we established a collaborative axis between the groups belonging to the Bioenergy Research Institute (IPBEN, UNESP), the Brazilian Laboratory of Ethanol Science and Technology (CTBE), University of São Paulo USP) and the University of Queensland, Australia. Experimental approaches such as alternative protocols for adaptive laboratory evolution, mapping of quantitative traits, new generation sequencing, flow cytometry assisted competition and phenotyping tests will be used to discover the genetic basis of yeast tolerance to the hydrolysate rich in inhibitors (LCH) of sugarcane bagasse. Thus, using modern molecular genetic tools and the CRISPR / Cas9 genome editing technology, a yeast strain resistant to the toxicity of the lignocellulosic hydrolysates will be constructed and suitable for the production of cellulosic ethanol.
Requirements
The candidate for the Direct Doctorate position must have, or be finishing, graduation in areas related to biology, microbiology, genetics or biochemistry. In compliance with the rules of FAPESP (http://www.fapesp.br/278#6), the candidate must have a graduation recently completed and within the normal term, with an excellent academic record and, preferably, successful stage of Scientific Initiation. Alternatively, the candidate can be transferred from the MSc to PhD. Candidates with full masters cannot be considered.
The selected student will be enrolled in the integrated Bioenergy Doctoral program offered jointly by the three main universities of São Paulo (UNESP / UNICAMP / USP). Therefore, the candidate must conform to the formal selection criteria required for joining the program (http://sites.usp.br/phdbioenergy/applications/). The PhD program in Bioenergy is internationally oriented with classes lectured in English by videoconference.
Subscription
The application should be sent to Dr. Ana Paula Jacobus (anapjacobus@gmail.com). The application package should contain:
1- Letter of motivation (cover letter);
2- Updated curriculum;
3- List of technical skills (i.e., what the candidate masters of techniques in the laboratory);
4- Names and e-mails of two academic references;
5- Graduation school record.
Applications will be accepted and analyzed until 08/01/2019. The start of the scholarship is planned for the second half of 2019.
