The Research School of Earth Sciences (RSES) at the Australian National University (ANU) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow/ Research Fellow in inverse geodynamics. The goal is a reconstruction of the thermo-chemical state of Earth’s mantle, in space and time. The position will focus upon the computational development, validation and application of inverse methods that allow present-day and time-dependent observations to be propagated backward through geological history, together with their uncertainties.

The position will be based at RSES, under the supervision of Dr Rhodri Davies. The successful applicant will also work closely with Prof. Malcolm Sambridge and Dr Andrew Valentine, and will interact with the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI), based at the ANU.

Program: Machine Learning for Image Analysis in Lung Disease

A post-doctoral position with one-year term and extendable for another year with satisfactory progress is available immediately for a highly motivated recent PhD graduate to join an interdisciplinary collaborative research team at the UBC Center for Heart Lung Innovation (HLI). The position will be focused on machine learning for the characterization of imaging biomarkers in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and associated diseases.

The research fellow will work under the supervision of James Hogg, MD, PhD, an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of British Columbia, Senior Investigator at the HLI located at St Paul’s Hospital, and member of the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame, and Roger Tam, PhD, an Associate Professor in the Department of Radiology and School of Biomedical Engineering, University of British Columbia.

The research will involve the development and application of machine learning methods to the analysis of structural and histopathological images of the lung to enhance the biological understanding of COPD and associated diseases. Machine learning approaches will be used to discover and link imaging biomarkers across multiple scales and imaging modalities.

Eligibility: Highly motivated individuals with a recent PhD in computer science, biomedical engineering, or related field, a strong publication record, and excellent academic credentials are encouraged to apply. Demonstrated familiarity with a range of machine learning methods, including ensemble learning methods such as random forests and feature learning methods such as deep learning, and expertise in the application of such methods to image analysis are required. Experience with biomedical imaging data is preferred. UBC hires on the basis of merit and is committed to employment equity. We encourage all qualified persons to apply. Duration: 1 year with possible extension for a second year.

Postdoctoral Student in Biology at Lund University

Project description

Ecosystem-based climate adaptations involve sustainable management of ecosystems to help humans adapt to climate change. To mitigate coastal erosion by using green infrastructure we will study the effects of two green actions in this project; beach nourishment and re-implantation of eelgrass meadows at four case study sites in southern Sweden. We look to understand how the effects of these measures contribute to increased biodiversity, decreased wave energy and increased cultural ecosystem services at these locations.

Southern Sweden is particularly vulnerable to rising sea levels. As winds from the west are becoming more common and pushing water towards the coast, Skåne and Halland will be further exposed to floods, as storms and precipitation will increase. However, in Denmark and Netherlands where they experience the same problems – beach nourishment and introducing eelgrass meadows has proven to be a successful method. The Swedish Geotechnical Institute, Sweden's national coordinator on coastal erosion, proposes combining beach nourishment with introducing vegetation on land and sea. The proposed project on how we can protect our coastal areas with green infrastructure, has a clear link with citizens and actors involved in spatial planning processes. The project is multidisciplinary and involves partnership between natural science, social science, geotechnology, engineers, the citizens and public administration on all levels.

PhD Studentship in Multiscale Modelling of Interacting Particle Systems (Fixed Term)

Applications are invited for a three-year PhD student position in Applied Mathematics to work with Dr Maria Bruna at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP). The studentship is funded by Dr Bruna's Royal Society Research Fellow Enhancement Award. The project involves the derivation of kinetic models of stochastic systems of interacting particles, with specific focus on accounting for excluded-volume interactions between particles.

The post is available from October 2019 and is open to EU and UK nationals. The PhD Studentship offered is fully funded for three years (to include University Composition Fees and maintenance for the duration of your course to RCUK minimum level).

Applicants should hold or be about to achieve a First or Upper-Second (2.i) class degree in mathematics or related field. The candidate must be capable of performing independent research and have good communication skills.

This project will involve stochastic modelling of particle-based models, asymptotic methods and numerical solution of partial differential equations (PDEs). Knowledge of probability theory, PDEs, and C++ and Python programming is desired.

The Research Training Group 2458 "The Dynamics of Demography, Democratic Processes and Public Policy" (DYNAMICS) invites applications for 5 Doctoral Researcher Positions. DYNAMICS provides doctoral researchers with a unique and internationally competitive three-year PhD programme in cutting-edge quantitative methods and advanced theories of demography, democracy and public policy. It is a joint endeavour of the Department of Social Sciences at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Hertie School of Governance and funded by the German Research Foundation. Doctoral positions will start in September 2019 and remuneration is based on Grade E13 TVL (65%) of the German Public Salary Scale.



DYNAMICS studies how demographic changes transform democratic processes, how policy decisions are made to address demographic challenges and how public policies influence demographic developments. We are seeking to appoint a Research Associate to develop scalable and robust artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques for the analysis and interpretation of medical images and related clinical data. The development of the artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) will enable faster and early diagnosis, automation of expensive and time-consuming manual reporting, enhanced patient screening and stratification for optimal treatment. Ultimately, this will support a major redesign of clinical pathways to improve outcomes and efficiency.

The successful candidate will work as part of the newly-established London Medical Imaging & Artificial Intelligence Centre, a new network funded by Innovate UK and the EPSRC. The London Medical Imaging & Artificial Intelligence Centre has been established to improve NHS patient care and health outcomes, reduce healthcare costs and support the growth of companies, supporting the economy. Its aim is to apply artificial intelligence technologies to medical imaging (for example, MRI scans, CT scans, PET scans and ultrasound). The Centre is a collaboration between three excellent universities (King's, Imperial and QMUL), four leading NHS trusts as well as companies (Siemens, NVIDIA, IBM, GSK) as well as a number of UK-based SMEs in the area healthcare-based AI.
