Preyer Postdoctoral Scholar for Strengthening Families, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, USA

Supervised by Dr. Rebecca Macy, the School of Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking an emerging scholar for a postdoctoral position to work with a team of faculty and students on research projects related to family, gender, and interpersonal violence (e.g., dating violence, domestic/partner violence, human trafficking, and/or sexual assault and violence). This postdoctoral scholar will support Macy and her team in: conducting literature reviews; conducting qualitative and quantitative data collection; developing grant applications; developing study designs, study protocols and IRB applications; qualitative and quantitative data management and analysis; and research and scholarly dissemination in scholarly as well as practitioner- and policy-based venues. This position will primarily focus on projects related to evaluating services for gender-based violence, developing interventions for elder abuse, and investigations of intimate partner homicide. While working with Macy and her team, the emerging scholar will also have opportunities to develop capacities, expertise, and skills for independent research.

PhD Scholarship in Frequency Combs in Linbo3 Waveguides

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Physics - specialization optics and photonics

The project concerns applied research in the field of integrated nonlinear optics in the framework of the European Network MICROCOMB, aiming at the demonstration of frequency comb generators based on quadratic nonlinearities. Frequency comb research is a Nobel prize winning area and frequency comb generators in compact integrated microresonators (microcombs) are now rapidly emerging as a disruptive technology with multi-disciplinary applications, which encompass metrology, ultrafast signal processing, astronomy, spectroscopy, quantum optics and soliton physics.

The goal of this project is to explore, through theory and experiments, the potential of quadratic optical nonlinearities for a novel class of microcomb devices. The project shall build upon the state-of-the-art nanophotonic platform developed at KTH for ultrahigh confinement and low loss waveguides in lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) and investigate with it novel nonlinear effects and devices, to demonstrate on-chip microcombs operating with quadratic nonlinearities in the cascading regime.

Through the project, you will become an expert in LNOI nanophotonics, microcombs and nonlinear optics and receive high-quality training in a broad range of experimental techniques for photonic device characterization, fabrication and modelling. Furthermore you shall gain skills in research collaboration, mobility and innovation and take part in a rich programme of trans-national scientific exchanges and events withing the MICROCOMB network, involving leading industry and academic partners across Europe.

Postdoc in Bacterial Protein Phosphorylation, Denmark

DTU Biosustain announces a vacancy in the Bacterial Signal Transduction group headed by Professor Ivan Mijakovic. We are a bacteriology laboratory, working with a broad range of topics. One major focus of our research is protein phosphorylation, a reversible post-translational modification which forms the basis of many signaling and regulatory mechanisms in the bacterial cell. We study bacterial cell factories, employing phosphorylation systems to improve their yield, and bacterial pathogens, to exploit phosphorylation systems as targets for development of new antibacterial drugs.

This particular position is related to a basic science project on protein phosphorylation in the bacterium Bacillus subtilis. The project will be related to the question how relatively few kinases in bacteria can control the phosphorylation state of a large number of substrate proteins. The experimental approach will entail mass spectrometry-based quantitative phosphoproteomics which will lead into functional characterization, both in vitro and in vivo, of select phosphoproteins.

The aim is to develop a new class of composites able to exploit the mechanical, thermal, optical and electrical properties of graphene and related materials. The post holder will undertake the optimization of inks, dispersions and composites based on graphene and exfoliated layered materials for a wide range of printing and coating techniques. The role holder will be responsible for testing the materials in transparent and conductive composites for photovoltaics, smart windows, touch screens, and flexible electronics devices in general. The role holder will develop stable, jettable inks based on such materials suitable for printing on a broad range of substrates including flexible, paper and textiles. The role holder will develop composites by combining two or more inks of different materials to fine-tune their properties. The role holder will also develop conducting polymer/graphene-coated microfibers and characterise their structural, physical, electrochemical properties and electrobiological functionality, for electronic interconnection, surgical handling and chronic implantation. This is an ambitious frontier research program, with a strong interdisciplinary nature, across engineering, physical, chemical and soft matter sciences, and will require the optimization of inks and solutions based on graphene and related materials, as well as their incorporation in a variety of host substances, ranging from polymers, to glass, metal, concrete, etc. with the aim of augmenting the mechanical, thermal, optical, or electronic properties of the host material.

PhD Scholarship Position in Microbiology/biotechnology/microbial Electrochemistry, Chalmers University of Technology

Major responsibilities
As a PhD student in our group, you will carry out research on microbial communities growing on electrode surfaces in bioelectrochemical systems. Some living microorganisms are capable of transferring electrons to or from solid electrodes. This phenomenon could have many practical applications. For example, bioelectrochemical system have been investigated for conversion of organic compounds in wastewater into electrical energy, production of energy carriers and chemicals, recovery of metals, and use as biosensors.

In this PhD project, you will focus on microbial communities that oxidize organic compounds and generate electrical current at an anode. You will investigate how the microbial communities assemble and develop over time, and how various factors affect their composition and performance. You will build, operate and analyze the performance of bioelectrochemical systems and you will use molecular tools such as PCR and high-throughput sequencing to study the microbial communities.

The Research School of Earth Sciences (RSES) at the Australian National University (ANU) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow/ Research Fellow in inverse geodynamics. The goal is a reconstruction of the thermo-chemical state of Earth’s mantle, in space and time. The position will focus upon the computational development, validation and application of inverse methods that allow present-day and time-dependent observations to be propagated backward through geological history, together with their uncertainties.

A post-doctoral position with one-year term and extendable for another year with satisfactory progress is available immediately for a highly motivated recent PhD graduate to join an interdisciplinary collaborative research team at the UBC Center for Heart Lung Innovation (HLI). The position will be focused on machine learning for the characterization of imaging biomarkers in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and associated diseases.

The research fellow will work under the supervision of James Hogg, MD, PhD, an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of British Columbia, Senior Investigator at the HLI located at St Paul’s Hospital, and member of the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame, and Roger Tam, PhD, an Associate Professor in the Department of Radiology and School of Biomedical Engineering, University of British Columbia.

The research will involve the development and application of machine learning methods to the analysis of structural and histopathological images of the lung to enhance the biological understanding of COPD and associated diseases. Machine learning approaches will be used to discover and link imaging biomarkers across multiple scales and imaging modalities.

Eligibility: Highly motivated individuals with a recent PhD in computer science, biomedical engineering, or related field, a strong publication record, and excellent academic credentials are encouraged to apply. Demonstrated familiarity with a range of machine learning methods, including ensemble learning methods such as random forests and feature learning methods such as deep learning, and expertise in the application of such methods to image analysis are required. Postdoctoral Student in Biology at Lund University

Project description

Ecosystem-based climate adaptations involve sustainable management of ecosystems to help humans adapt to climate change. To mitigate coastal erosion by using green infrastructure we will study the effects of two green actions in this project; beach nourishment and re-implantation of eelgrass meadows at four case study sites in southern Sweden. We look to understand how the effects of these measures contribute to increased biodiversity, decreased wave energy and increased cultural ecosystem services at these locations.

Southern Sweden is particularly vulnerable to rising sea levels. As winds from the west are becoming more common and pushing water towards the coast, Skåne and Halland will be further exposed to floods, as storms and precipitation will increase. However, in Denmark and Netherlands where they experience the same problems – beach nourishment and introducing eelgrass meadows has proven to be a successful method. The Swedish Geotechnical Institute, Sweden's national coordinator on coastal erosion, proposes combining beach nourishment with introducing vegetation on land and sea. The proposed project on how we can protect our coastal areas with green infrastructure, has a clear link with citizens and actors involved in spatial planning processes. The project is multidisciplinary and involves partnership between natural science, social science, geotechnology, engineers, the citizens and public administration on all levels.

PhD Studentship in Multiscale Modelling of Interacting Particle Systems (Fixed Term)

Applications are invited for a three-year PhD student position in Applied Mathematics to work with Dr Maria Bruna at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP). The studentship is funded by Dr Bruna's Royal Society Research Fellow Enhancement Award. The project involves the derivation of kinetic models of stochastic systems of interacting particles, with specific focus on accounting for excluded-volume interactions between particles.

The post is available from October 2019 and is open to EU and UK nationals. The PhD Studentship offered is fully funded for three years (to include University Composition Fees and maintenance for the duration of your course to RCUK minimum level).
