3-year postdoc position: using fMRI to study the interaction of attention and motivation

We are currently accepting applications for a postdoctoral position in the lab of Bianca Wittmann at the University of Giessen, Germany, just 70 km north of Frankfurt.

The project will investigate the interaction of attentional processes and reward learning using fMRI. Our department offers a research-dedicated 3T MRI scanner with eye-tracking and peripheral physiology equipment. The project is part of the Collaborative Research Centre SFB/TRR 135 under the umbrella theme “Cardinal mechanisms of perception: Prediction, valuation, categorization” (www.sfb-perception.de). The Collaborative Research Centre offers a creative, cooperative environment uniting leading experts in vision research.

The successful candidate will be responsible for collecting and analyzing fMRI data using computational models of learning and decision-making, writing scientific papers and teaching in biological psychology according to the teaching regulations of the state of Hesse. We offer funding for research visits in collaborating research groups abroad (e.g. Princeton University, PI: Yael Niv).

We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a PhD in neuroscience, psychology, biology or a related field. Candidates should have good programming skills and prior publications using fMRI and/or computational modeling of learning or decision making.

The ENCOUNTER project seeks to investigate the transition from the Jomon to the Yayoi period, a major demic and cultural diffusion event that led the predominantly hunting, gathering, and fishing-based communities of the Japanese islands to adopt rice and millet farming during the 1st millennium BC. The reception to the new subsistence strategy and the associated cultural package was highly diverse and ultimately resulted into cultural, linguistic, and genetic clines that are still tangible today. The aim of the ENCOUNTER project is to determine why indigenous inhabitants responded so differently to the arrival of the new cultural package. It will examine the dynamics of this transition by synthesising one of the richest archaeological records available in the world and by employing a wide range of techniques, including but not limited to, organic residue analysis, summed probability distribution of radiocarbon dates, macro-evolutionary analysis of material culture, archaeobotanical analysis, computational and statistical modelling, and pollen-based reconstructions of vegetation cover.

3 Year PhD Studentship in Enabling Next Generation Additive Manufacturing

Title: Novel micro/nano scale characterisation of interfaces in multimaterial additive manufacturing (3D printing).

PhD Project description:

A primary concern with regards to enabling this next generation of AM systems is the difficulty of inter and intra layer coalescence/bonding of functional-structural or functional-functional materials due to differences in physical state, chemistry and temperature at deposition or conversion. To overcome these problems one of the requirements is the development of a suite of ex-situ interface analysis techniques capable of delivering a complete 3D characterisation of samples at the micro/nano scale with high spatial resolution. These are not limited by, but rely strongly on, techniques such as focused ion beam (FIB), (cryo) scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The aim of this project is to advance the fundamental understanding of interface phenomena in multi-material additive manufacturing and this will be achieved mainly by the development of tailored methodologies related to all strands of electron microscopy. Work will mostly be carried out in the Centre for Additive Manufacturing - CfAM as well as in the Nanoscale and Microscale Research Centre - nmRC (https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/nmrc).

PhD: Imitation learning and inverse control

The goal is to instruct robots by example how the task should be performed. We will rely on human demonstrations using skeleton tracking or motion capture rather than on kinesthetic demonstrations. The trajectories of the end-effector(s), as well as associated force and compliance parameters will be learned for individual sub-tasks. Direct mapping from human demonstrations to a robot is not always efficient due to different embodiments, hence we rather want to extract the priors and the general strategies for tasks as well as the objective functions. Instead of directly guiding the behavior of the robot, we can update the task specifications by estimating the intended user goal via an inverse control problem.

This vacancy is part of the FlexCRAFT program funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). The goal of the program is to develop new robotics solutions for agriculture and food processing, where robots must be able to handle a substantial variation in shape, size and hardness of the different products, which is still a major challenge for the current robotics technology. The research aims at developing generic skills for robots to enable them to perform operations like automated harvesting of tomatoes, processing and packaging of meat and the packaging of bags of crisps and boxes of biscuits. PhD Position for Synthetic Biology-inspired Therapies

The Biotechnology and Bioengineering group directed by Prof. Martin Fussenegger at the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE), ETH Zurich in Basel is recruiting a Doctoral student (PhD) for a research project in the field of personalized medicine. Unique Senior Researcher Position at Örebro University

The University of Örebro* seeks to appoint a full-time senior researcher with established expertise in AI and Machine Learning.

Job description: This is a unique academic position. The appointed candidate should hold a PhD or be near to completion. She or he will work closely together with different research groups at Örebro University who represent specific research problems and need AI/ML expertise in their projects . However, the candidate is *not* expected to acquire external funding and will *not* have to teach. Instead, she will act as AI/ML expert and interface to the technical infrastructure. The position thus leaves room to keep in touch with current AI/ML developments and admits improvement of specialist skills. While the candidate will be of course included in all publications that result from the collaboration with other researchers at Örebro University, it is optional to pro-actively drive research or to develop an own research portfolio beyond her core expertise.

Research environment: The position is jointly offered by three research environments at Örebro University: AASS**, MTM/EnForce***, and MV****. AASS is one of the nationally leading research groups in robotics, AI and applied Machine Learning. MTM/EnForce also has a nationally strong position in environmental chemistry and toxicology. Project: The first permanent molar often exhibits regions with hypomineralized enamel when erupted. One or more of the teeth may be affected. The condition is called Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) [Weerheijm et al. 2001] and is common in child populations (2.4 - 40.2%) [Jälevik 2010]. Clinically, the porous, hypomineralized areas appear as white-yellow to brownish demarcated opaque spots. In these areas, the enamel is insufficiently mineralized to varying degrees and can break apart [Jälevik & Norén 2000]. The affected teeth create problems for the child as well as for the dentist. The teeth can be very painful, e.g., when brushing teeth, ingesting cold drinks or ice cream. The teeth with severely damaged enamel are in need of repair shortly after eruption due to disintegrated enamel and subsequent caries [Leppäniemi et al 2006, Jälevik & Klingberg 2002, Espelid et al. 2009]. As a consequence of repeated painful treatments, the children show more treatment problems and dental fear and anxiety [Jälevik & Klingberg 2002]. In cases of widespread disintegration, disturbing hypersensitivity and/or increasing dental fear and anxiety, extraction may be a treatment option.

PhD position Implementing smart energy grids in Europe and beyond (V39.3625)

Within this EU project, your focus will be on four inter-connected topics:

You will contribute to ongoing research on Responsible Innovation, focusing on issues that occur in the practical implementation of innovations in the private sector.
You will analyze the role of local energy communities in the transition towards new (smart) energy systems; including questions of engagement and co-creation.

PhD position: Impact of energy transition on voltage quality (V36.3623)

Voltage quality in each network is influenced by several aspects, including the load and generation mixtures and operating profiles as well as the network structure. In the recent years, and years to come, power systems are undergoing an “energy transition” – with the increase of renewable generation as one of the most significant aspects. Renewable generation is very often inverter-interfaced (with the exception of hydro generators), and behaves differently in comparison with conventional (directly coupled synchronous) generators.

The main question of this PhD project is: what is the expected influence of the reduction of conventional generation on the quality of voltage supply in the Netherlands? This question can further be divided into sub-questions:

Frequency and propagation of voltage dips,
Slow voltage variations, rapid voltage changes, flicker, waveform distortion and unbalance,
Influence of network contingencies (e.g. N-2), methodology for calculating the short-circuit levels,
Influence of fault-ride through characteristics of inverter-interfaced generators
Mitigation methods for possible problems
Considerations for adapting existing regulation (connection requirements, device requirements etc.).

Postdoc/ Fellowship Position in Law & Tech, ETHZ

The postdoc will have the opportunity to develop a course containing 14 distinct lectures in Spring 2020 that explore and showcase the legal implications of cutting-edge developments in engineering and the sciences.
