Conducting interviews at SFN for a Brown University Human Imaging & Computational Neuroscience Position

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the lab of Dr. Stephanie Jones at Brown University. Our group combines human electrophysiological recordings and computational neural modeling techniques to study the mechanisms and meaning of brain dynamics in health in disease. We collaborate extensively with animal electrophysiologists and clinicians to develop data constrained models that are translationally relevant. We are expanding our research efforts to including non-invasive brain stimulation. A postdoctoral position is available to integrate simultaneous human EEG and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in humans, with computational neural modeling developments. The postdoctoral researcher will help expand our new software tool Human Neocortical Neurosolver (https://hnn.brown.edu) for circuit level interpretation of EEG/MEG signals to include TMS studies. She/he will also help with the design, implementation and analysis of our TMS/EEG experiments.

Candidates should have a PhD in neuroscience, computational neuroscience, computer science, applied mathematics, biomedical engineering, and/or related field. Strong quantitative and programming skills are required. The ideal candidate would have experience in computational neuroscience methods applied to human EEG and brain stimulation data. However, experience in all areas is not required. Candidates should be able to work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary and fun work environment.

The Neural Decoding and Data Analytics Lab at the Center for Bioelectronic Medicine, headed by Assistant Professor Theo Zanos PhD, focuses on neural recordings and data analysis methods to gain insights into decoding and encoding mechanisms of the brain and peripheral nerves to and from stimuli, actions and other physiological functions. The lab utilizes a variety of techniques from signal processing, machine learning, optimization, neurophysiology and bioelectronic systems for closed-loop neural recording and stimulation, both in health and in disease models. The ultimate goal is to develop neuromodulation therapies that will observe the state of the organism and the organ system that is targeted, to deliver individualized treatment of diseases in real-time.

The successful candidate will develop or deploy computational tools, will take part in neurophysiology experiments and collect data, organize and analyze data, collaborate with other research staff and publish and present data in a timely manner. They will also work collaboratively with other investigators to facilitate their scientific research and training. Furthermore, they will participate in various types of institute and community activities and may apply for grant funding and/or patents as appropriate. The position comes with considerably competitive compensation.

Ph.D. positions in Cognitive Neuroscience on spatial navigation, memory and conceptual processing

My newly established lab at the Center for Mind/Brain Sciences in Trento (Northern Italy) is looking for Ph.D. candidates interested in studying the neural mechanisms of spatial navigation, conceptual knowledge, and their interaction. The post-holder will work in the context of an ERC-Starting Grant (NOAM) on the spatial organization of declarative knowledge.

The ideal candidates should have excellent understanding of neuroimaging data analysis, as well as strong programming skills (matlab, python, R, etc.). Experience with state of the art data analysis techniques (e.g., Representational Similarity Analysis, MVPA, hexadirectional coding), as well as computational approaches to cognitive neuroscience and/or computational linguistics are a plus. Excellent English (oral and written) and good communication skills are necessary.

The university of Trento is one of the best University in Italy, and in 2018 was the best Italian university in the European Teaching Ranking. Moreover the Center for Mind/Brain Sciences (CIMeC) has been recently ranked as the leading Cognitive Neuroscience research unit in Italy. Its faculty have won several highly competitive grants on the international and national levels, including European Research Council (ERC) Starting, Consolidator and Advanced grants, as well as highly competitive grants awarded by the local province.

The research center has amazing facilities, including a brand new 3T fMRI scanner Siemens Trio (100% research), and an Elekta 306 channel MEG system. Different brain stimulation devices are available, including a TMS- EEG combined set up. We may also have access, through external collaborations, to a 7T scanner. The official language in the center is English and several students, researchers and PIs come from abroad.

The Trentino region is at the top level for quality of life in Europe, with fantastic nature (the Dolomite, lake Garda), great infrastructures and welfare. The weather is beautiful and the food is delicious.

Although the Ph.D. program selection will be in March 2019 (Start in November 2019), we invite applications as soon as possible. The overall project aims to advance our understanding of disparities in child development by parental socioeconomic status (SES). It leverages rich cohort and administrative data from six countries - France, Germany, Japan, Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States – embedding them in a harmonized framework. The project moves beyond cross-sectional and single country snapshots by studying the question of how inequalities develop over time (ages 3 to 16), what factors may influence inequalities and how national context may strengthen or buffer these processes. Child development is conceptualised broadly, to include cognitive, social/emotional and health outcomes, recognizing the interplay of multiple spheres of development in childhood.

The Humphries’ lab interrogates how the joint activity of many neurons encodes the past, present, and future, in order to guide behaviour. We combine simulations of neural circuits with “neural data science” – the development and use of machine-learning approaches to systems neuroscience data. We are particularly interested in PhD projects on the following research questions:
“Mapping the wires from neural activity”. How to use the next generation of imaging techniques that directly record neuron voltages to accurately infer the wiring between neurons.
“How to write activity into neurons". What features of neural activity should we change with optogenetics in order to test hypotheses about population activity?
“Dynamic control of the striatum in health and disease”. How the influence of the striatal interneurons is controlled by dopamine, and how that influence goes haywire when dopamine is lost in Parkinson’s disease.

PhD positions are available for students interested in interdisciplinary research in the area of visual attention. Students will be able to work with neuroscience faculty at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH and Montana State University (MSU) in Bozeman, MT on a collaborative project funded by a multi-site (Dartmouth, Brown, Montana State and the University of Nevada at Reno) NSF EPSCoR award to study the neural bases of visual attention. One fMRI MVPA Post-Doc (very competitive salary) 5 year position available under an ERC Starting Grant on the organization of object knowledge

The Proaction Laboratory (Perception and Recognition of Objects and Actions;http://gaius.fpce.uc.pt/pessoais/jorgealmeida/proaction_home.html; Jorge Almeida’s Lab) at the University of Coimbra (www.uc.pt), Portugal is looking for a motivated and bright Post-doctoral researcher to work on an ERC Starting Grant project (ContentMAP) on the neural organization of object knowledge. In this project we will explore how complex information is topographically organized in the brain using fMRI and state of the art analytical techniques, as well as computational approaches, and neuromodulation.

Excellent understanding of and experience with fMRI and data analysis is required. Strong programming skills (matlab, python, etc.) are also a requirement. Experience with data analysis techniques using MVPA and other multivariate approaches (e.g., Representation Similarity Analysis). Very good English (oral and written) communicative skills are necessary.

The position is for a maximum of 5 years, and will start in February 2019. The position involves no formal teaching (unless the candidate wants to). It does involve, however, lab mentoring.

The salary is extremely competitive – between 2200 and 2400 euros per month (dependent on experience), tax free (annual 26400-28800 euros tax free). This value is on par with the average salaries at top American institutions, as well as London, Paris, etc. However, the cost of living in Portugal (and particularly in Coimbra) is much lower. According to Numbeo, 2400 euros would be equivalent to 4850 pounds in London/4800 euros in Paris/6615 USD in Boston/6210 USD in Los Angeles/ 8330 USD in New York).

The researcher will work directly with Jorge Almeida in Coimbra, but the laboratory has extensive collaborations with researchers throughout the world. In fact, there may be the option of spending some time in another lab as part of the position. The researcher will also be encouraged to develop her/his own projects and look for additional funding so that the stay can be extended.

We have access to a 3T MRI scanner with a 32-channel coil (with EEG inside the scanner), to tDCS with neuronavigation, and to a fully set psychophysics lab. We have EEG and eyetracking on site. We also have access, through other collaborations, to a 7T scanner. Finally, the University of Coimbra is a 700 year old University and has been selected as a UNESCO world Heritage site. Coimbra is one of the most lively university cities in the world, and it is a beautiful city with easy access to the beach and mountain.

The GWIS National Fellowships Program is proud to offer fellowships in 2019 to help increase knowledge in the natural sciences and to encourage research careers in the sciences by women. Endowment funds, mostly generated from bequests, provide the annual income that supports scientific research done by GWIS award winners. For the 2018-2019 funding cycle, we distributed approximately $50,000 in fellowships funds to five deserving women scientists.



The Fellowships are known as the Sigma Delta Epsilon (SDE), Eloise Gerry, Ethel K. Allen, Vessa Notchev, Jean Langenheim, Monique Braude, Nell I. Mondy, Elizabeth Weisburger, and Hartley Corporation Fellowships. The highest scoring SDE Fellowships designee shall be known as the Adele Lewis Grant/SDE Fellowships winner and the second-highest scoring designee shall be known as the Hartley Corporation/SDE Fellowships Winner. The funds available in any one year shall be the income from and contributions to the endowment accounts. The amount thus varies from year to year. The Fellowships Committee reserves the right to make no awards if no satisfactory applicants present themselves.

Postdoc position in Neural Machine Translation (CIS, LMU Munich)

I am expanding my research group, which is located at the Center for Information and Language Processing at the University of Munich (LMU).

This is a postdoc level position and it currently has one year of full-time funding from my ERC Starting Grant.

Candidates will focus on cutting edge research into using deep learning techniques to solve machine translation (neural machine translation). The group is a well-known machine translation research group with strong interests in related natural language problems. The working language of the group is English, no knowledge of German is required. The three main focuses of the group are in neural machine translation: 1) domain adaptation 2) adding linguistic information to character NMT 3) unsupervised NMT.

Candidates will have possibilities to teach, supervise bachelors/masters students, and to collaborate on grant applications.

CIS has an active community working on cutting-edge natural language processing. There will be significant interaction with the research groups of Hinrich Schütze (deep learning and a variety of NLP problems) and Helmut Schmid (neural machine translation, parsing, tagging, morphology). We also have several active collaborations with colleagues at other universities.

The University of Munich is one of the top research universities in Europe. It was the highest ranked institution on several measures in the Exzellenzinitiative funding program organized by the German national science foundation in 2012.

Munich and the Upper Bavaria area are among the regions in Europe with the highest quality of living. The area is also home to a large number of high-tech, service and manufacturing companies, including many that use NLP technology.
