At the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research, one of the 83 institutes of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science, physicists, chemists and biologists create knowledge of long-term relevance to life and basic medical sciences.

In the Department of Cellular Biophysics we are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our lab at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research, for a PhD position. The concerted effort in our lab is directed towards developing of highly innovative and creative approaches in bottom-up synthetic biology. The successful candidate will develop novel approaches for bottom-up reconstitution of dynamic actomyosin and microtubule cytoskeletal networks within the synthetic cells.

Candidates should have a Master’s or equivalent degree in Biophysics, Biochemistry, Molecular Cell Biology, Chemistry, or related fields. An experimental background in biophysics and microfluidics is preferable. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English are required.

The payment is based on the TVöD guidelines (“Promotionsfördervertrag”). The PhD position is limited to three years with a possibility of extension.

The Institute for Language, Cognition and Computation (ILCC) at the University of Edinburgh invites applications for three-year PhD studentships starting in September 2019. ILCC is dedicated to the pursuit of basic and applied research on computational approaches to language, communication and cognition.

Primary research areas include:

Ph.D. position in Raman spectroscopy, Helmholtz Zentrum München

The mission

The successful candidate will lead advances within an innovative research program that develops a novel endoscope combining stimulated Raman spectroscopy and scattering. The goal is to shift the paradigm in cancer early diagnosis. The project is geared toward methods development to analyze the acquired multimodal data and to provide fast and accurate label-free in vivo biopsy. We expect this project to result in a substantial technology leap in cancer early detection, enabling rapid translation into clinical diagnostics and personalized surveillance intervals.

Your profile

The successful applicant must have the following:

An M.Sc. in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or related discipline.
Excellent academic records.
Strong motivation, scientific curiosity and commitment to scientific excellence.
High knowledge of Raman data processing, analysis, and classification.
Knowledge of machine learning techniques and statistics is highly appreciated.

Two PhD positions: Understanding Pseudomonas aeruginosa pathogenicity using structural biology tools, Helmholtz Zentrum München

Project description:
The candidates will investigate the structural determinants of novel pathogenicity factors in Pseudomonas aeruginosa using X-ray technologies, electron microscopy and microbial multi-omics data. The project will involve establishment of new research protocols, identification of novel virulence factors, resolution of 3D protein structures and large-scale data processing. The two positions are oriented towards talented students with background in biophysics and/or molecular microbiology, who are willing to work in the wet lab handling infectious agents. This work is a collaborative project between the groups of Prof. M. Kolbe from the Helmholtz Centre for Structural Infection (HZI) and Prof. J. Labahn from Jülich Research Center (FZJ) under the umbrella of the CSSB in Hamburg.

Qualifications:

Master in Physics or Life Science (biophysics, molecular microbiology, biochemistry, cell biology or a related field) obtained with the grade of distinction.
Interest in crystallography and microbiology is a prerequisite, background in structural biology and microbiology is an advantage.
Strong analytical skills to solve complex project-related scientific problems.
Excellent experimental and organizational skills.
A good command of the English language (written and spoken) is an asset.
Ability to work independently and as part of an international team
A strong desire to do research with high self-motivation and enthusiasm

Description of Group/Project: The host develops cutting-edge theoretical research on quantum transport phenomena in graphene and 2D materials and has a long experience in large-scale simulations of complex materials. In-house methodologies allow the simulation of disordered materials containing up to hundred millions atoms, enabling predictive modelling and collaboration with experimental and technology research. The group has been funded by company such as SAMSUNG, and is member of the Graphene Flagship project since 2014.

The project is connected to an EU-FET project in which European industries and engineering laboratories will develop novel generation of gas sensors, while the group will be in charge of the modelling tasks to guide the experimental towards optimisation of devices and support the interpretation of measurements.

DTU Chemical Engineering invites applications for a 3-year PhD position in Methane production and carbon capture through hydrate swapping.

This project considers the problem of using carbon dioxide to produce the vast resources of natural gas locked up as solid gas hydrates in permafrost and oceanic margin zones. The natural gas hydrates are converted to CO2 hydrates, thereby storing CO2 (the major greenhouse gas) while simultaneously releasing natural gas. This so-called “swapping” process, whereby methane (the major component in natural gas) in the hydrate is replaced by CO2, allows for production of natural gas from hydrate without adversely affecting the stability of the solid hydrate.

Delft University of Technology offers three positions for PhD students as part of the research project Design for changing values: a theory of value change in sociotechnical systems. The entire project consists of 3 PhD positions and 2 postdoc positions and will be supervised by prof.dr.ir. Ibo van de Poel. A complete description of the project can be requested. The project aims at better understanding how moral values may change as a result of technological development and how we can better deal with such changing values in the design of new technology.


Each of the PhD positions focuses on one of the following more specific topics:

· Changing values and the design of energy systems

· Design for value change in robot systems and artificial intelligence

· Design strategies for value change in sociotechnical systems


Each of the projects involves empirical as well philosophical investigations into the phenomenon of value change and its implications for the design of sociotechnical systems. The first two projects focus on value change in a more specific domain (energy systems and artificial intelligence). The third project focuses on developing design strategies that better allow to deal with value change.


The candidate will carry out doctoral research which will lead to a dissertation, and will also produce relevant publications. The candidate will participate in the Graduate School of TU Delft and in PhD program of the 4TU.Centre for Ethics and Technology. We aim to develop biomarkers that can quickly and reliably detect epileptogenic brain tissue in intracranial EEG (iEEG) recordings of epilepsy patients. In particular, High-Frequency Oscillations (HFO) have been recently established as promising biomarkers to guide epilepsy surgery.

This postdoctoral position is part of the research program The Formal Demography of Kinship and Family (FORMKIN), which is funded by a European Research Council Advanced Grant to Prof Hal Caswell. The overall goal of FORMKIN is to develop and apply a matrix analytic model for kinship demography, which will compute the kinship network implied by schedules of mortality and fertility. It will develop this theory at the levels of the individual, the cohort, and the population. The models will be applied to comparisons of countries, regions, socioeconomic groups, and historical periods.

This postdoctoral project will focus on applications of the models to human demographic data, from as wide an array of sources as possible (including, but not limited to, databases, surveys, censuses, register data, and models), to explore both familiar questions, and develop new ones, in family demography. You will be responsible for identifying sources of data, developing substantive research questions, and carrying out analyses.
