1 Phd Position in the field of Ultrafast spectroscopy on molecules
Part-time position (75 %), Start-date: At the earliest possible date.
The experimental project is aimed at studying ultrafast electronic and nuclear dynamics in molecules by means of coincidence spectroscopy techniques. A cold molecular jet will be achieved by supersonic expansion of gases at high backing pressure. Mixture of different gases will be used to compare results obtained under the same experimental conditions. Photoionisation and photodissociation of the molecules will be triggered by the absorption of an extreme ultraviolet photon from an attosecond pulse train. Diatomic molecules (for example O2) or triatomic linear molecules (for example CO2 and OCS) will be investigated.


We are looking for excellent MSc graduates with a strong background in experimental Atomic and Molecular Physics. Experience in the use of ultrashort and high-repetition rate lasers, photoelectron and photoion spectrometers, and high-vacuum equipment is advantageous.

Princeton University, Professorship. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Princeton University invites applications for a faculty position with a preferred start date of September 1, 2019. The department has a long history of innovation and creativity in research addressing important topics in civil and environmental engineering. PhD scholarship in Methane Production and Carbon Capture through Hydrate Swapping

DTU Chemical Engineering invites applications for a 3-year PhD position in Methane production and carbon capture through hydrate swapping.

This project considers the problem of using carbon dioxide to produce the vast resources of natural gas locked up as solid gas hydrates in permafrost and oceanic margin zones. The natural gas hydrates are converted to CO2 hydrates, thereby storing CO2 (the major greenhouse gas) while simultaneously releasing natural gas. This so-called “swapping” process, whereby methane (the major component in natural gas) in the hydrate is replaced by CO2, allows for production of natural gas from hydrate without adversely affecting the stability of the solid hydrate.

Responsibilities and tasks
The project will involve thermodynamic and kinetic modeling of gas hydrate systems and processes as well as molecular simulation, for example to probe the formation of CO2 hydrate and dissociation of CH4 hydrate in a production/storage scenario.

NanoBeam is an independent group headed by Dr. Nahid Talebi, funded by the European Research Council and the Max Planck Society. We seek researchers with an outstanding background in physics, physical chemistry, or electrical engineering, to help the PI to control the interaction of electron beams and light with functional materials. The ambition of the NanoBeam group is to develop a novel spectral interferometry technique with electron beams to characterize and control the mechanisms of charge and energy transfer in functional materials.

The postdoctoral research scientists will be integral members of a multidisciplinary research team dedicated to becoming global leaders in the research, development, and education of nucleic acid memory (NAM).



Our vision is to pioneer a digital data storage paradigm by designing, building, and testing accessible, editable, and non-volatile NAM technologies that are inspired by DNA circuits and made possible by our innovations in DNA nanotechnology, optical physics, as well as the materials, biological, and computational sciences. This nationally competitive funded research (NSF Award ECCS-1807809), will focus on designing, synthesizing, and characterizing functional DNA nanostructures for applications in nucleic acid memory. The nanostructures will form the foundation for two NAM storage prototypes: digital NAM (dNAM) and sequence NAM (seqNAM).

Postdoc Scholar - Department Surgery UH

We are a highly translational lab led by the Chief of Surgical Oncology, with NCI funding in place for the next 7 years. Pancreatic cancer is the most aggressive of the common cancers, with the worst survival and is expected to be the second leading cause of cancer death in the next decade. We are focused on helping to solve this problem, and eager to identify a post-doc with the same aspiration. Importantly, the post-doc must work well with others, and have a desire to help cancer patients as a principal motivation for their work. The post-doc position is a key one within the lab. The post-doc will work closely with the PI to lead these efforts, and will be responsible for planning and execution of experiments. The lab works closely with other PI's at the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, as well as clinical departments at University Hospitals, including collaborations with a multidisciplinary team of biologists, statisticians, and clinicians. The qualified candidate will prepare manuscripts and contribute preliminary data, background and significance and experimental design for grant proposals. The work focuses more specifically on understanding how pancreatic cancer cells adapt to survive and thrive in a harsh metabolic milieu, and additionally how metabolic reprogramming confers resistance to both conventional chemotherapy and novel immunotherapies. Additional projects in the lab include the development of novel drug discovery platforms, and studying molecular mechanisms that underlie pancreatic cancer-associated depression. Lab work will involve tissue culture; DNA, RNA, and protein-related assays; drug-sensitivity assays, and small animal work. Additionally, studies will interface with experts in pathology, biostatistics, medicinal chemistry and other specialties. The candidate should be able to work independently, read and critically interpret the literature, assist with designing and planning of projects, oversee collaborations, supervise students, manage animal models, and to carry out research on the assigned project. They will also be encouraged to apply for grants to gain experience and support future projects.

* Project 1: Text-mining for Clinical Decision Support

Natural language processing and information retrieval techniques have long been explored in real-world applications such as healthcare. However, there are still many problems within the healthcare that are in need of text processing techniques to advance their current state. Clinical decision support for cancer patient is one of these applications. This project intends to extend on the recent tasks proposed by TREC Clinical Decision Support and TREC Precision Medicine (http://www.trec-cds.org/) to develop text search and processing techniques that extracts relevant information given a patients condition and history to the medical practitioners. This project will focus on extracting relevant to a patient given information such a clinical notes, disease or demographics background from the literature and clinical trials. The candidate will work on information extraction techniques, as well as search and information retrieval algorithms. 

Students applying for this scholarship should have a background in computer science/engineering. Should be interested in one or more of the following:
1- Natural language processing  especially information extraction or text summarisation, 
2- Machine learning techniques, such as support vector machines, or neural networks
3- Search and Information retrieval techniques, such as different ranking models

The student is expected to have Python programming skills. Familiarity with Scikit-learn, PyTorch or Tensorflow and experience in running code in clusters is a plus.

* Project 2: Figurative Language Detection and interpretation for Public Health

Figurative language (such as metaphors or sarcasm) has proven to be challenging for natural language processing tasks such as sentiment analysis. Therefore, approaches that understand  (detect/interpret) figurative language have been reported in the past. In the context of public health monitoring, figurative language detection and interpretation assumes importance because figurative language may reflect emotional states arising due to a health condition. The project aims to apply advances in machine learning to improve figurative language processing and public health monitoring using textual datasets.

CIHR Postdoctoral Fellowship - Machine Learning, Health Research, Canada

CIHR’s Health Research Training Strategy aims to equip research trainees so that they emerge from their training as scientific, professional, or organizational leaders within and beyond the health research enterprise. Generating Research Leaders of tomorrow is a key objective for CIHR.

Fellowships provide support for highly qualified applicants in all areas of health research at the post-PhD degree or post-health professional degree stages to add to their experience by engaging in health research either in Canada or abroad.

Funds Available

CIHR and partner(s) financial contributions for this initiative are subject to availability of funds. Should CIHR or partner(s) funding levels not be available or are decreased due to unforeseen circumstances, CIHR and partner(s) reserve the right to reduce, defer or suspend financial contributions to awards received as a result of this funding opportunity.

The awards consist of a stipend and a research allowance and are valued in Canadian dollars. It is anticipated that approximately $21 million over five years will be available through this competition.
The maximum amount awarded for a single award is up to $60,000 per annum for up to 5 years. The value and duration of each award is determined by the degree(s) held, licensure (where applicable), location of tenure and experience of the applicant.
Stipend

The annual stipend level for:

Trainees with a PhD degree is $40,000 per annum.
Health Professionals who hold licensure (full or educational) in Canada and have less than 2 years of research or clinical training experience is $40,000 per annum. Upon completion of two years of postgraduate research training, the awardee may be eligible to receive a stipend increase to the higher level.
Health Professionals who hold licensure (full or educational) in Canada and have two or more years of research or clinical training experience is $50,000 per annum.
Health professionals who do not hold licensure in Canada is $21,000 per annum. Upon completion of two years of postgraduate research training, the stipend may increase to $40,000 per annum.
For awards physically held outside Canada, $5,000 is added to the annual stipend.

Research allowance: $5,000 per annum.

PhD position: Bottom-up engineering of synthetic cells, Germany: Max Planck Institute

At the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research, one of the 83 institutes of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science, physicists, chemists and biologists create knowledge of long-term relevance to life and basic medical sciences.

In the Department of Cellular Biophysics we are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our lab at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research, for a PhD position. The concerted effort in our lab is directed towards developing of highly innovative and creative approaches in bottom-up synthetic biology. The successful candidate will develop novel approaches for bottom-up reconstitution of dynamic actomyosin and microtubule cytoskeletal networks within the synthetic cells.

Candidates should have a Master’s or equivalent degree in Biophysics, Biochemistry, Molecular Cell Biology, Chemistry, or related fields. An experimental background in biophysics and microfluidics is preferable. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English are required.

The payment is based on the TVöD guidelines (“Promotionsfördervertrag”). The PhD position is limited to three years with a possibility of extension.
