Job description
The quest for evidence-based education is an outstanding challenge. An important issue remains to understand the individual learner on such a level that an optimal learning experience can be provided. You will investigate how metacognitive knowledge and regulation develops within university students while progressing through their bachelor career, and how that development relates to physical changes in the different prefrontal cortex regions.
During three consecutive years you will map students’ metacognitive skills and accompanying learning styles. Within the project you will:
Rely on data-driven learning analytics extracted from Learning Management Systems (such as Canvas), as well as dedicated questionnaires and experiments;
Develop specific learning interventions aimed at improving metacognitive awareness and academic achievement;
Relate metacognitive skills to structural differences in the brain using MRI.
The PhD candidate will divide her or his time between the Informatics Institute and the Psychology Research Institute but will mainly be hosted at the Informatics Institute.
The project includes 0.1 fte teaching. Teaching activities include supervision of bachelor and (research) master theses, which might yield publishable data.

CONTEXT
Because memorizing and executing gestures is challenging for users, most current approaches to movement-based interaction consider intuitive interfaces and trivial gesture vocabularies. While these facilitate adoption, they also limit users' potential for more complex, expressive and truly embodied interaction. Considering movement-based interaction beyond the mouse-keyboard paradigm, the ANR project ELEMENT (Enabling Learnability in Embodied Movement Interaction) proposes to shift the focus from intuitiveness towards learnability: new interaction paradigms require users to develop specific sensorimotor skills compatible with – and transferable between, – digital interfaces (including video interface, mobile devices, internet of things, game interfaces). With learnable interactions, novice users should be able to approach a new system with a difficulty adapted to their expertise, then the system should be able to carefully adapt to the improving motor skills, and eventually enable complex, expressive and engaging interactions. The long-term aim is to foster innovation in multimodal interaction, from assistive technologies to media interaction in creative applications.

The BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg established in 2016 the Cluster »Cognitive Dependable Cyber Physical Systems« under the direction of Professor Douglas Cunningham, Chair of Graphical Systems, Faculty 1, in the Graduate Research School (GRS). Clusters are an important instrument for promoting young researchers and they shall strengthen the research profile of the BTU. Outstanding candidates may apply for a scholarship of up to 36 months to conduct their research in a structured and innovative doctoral programme. Postdoctoral Position in Affective and Clinical/Translational Neuroscience, University of Maryland
andidates are being considered for a NIMH-funded postdoctoral position in the laboratory of Dr. Alex Shackman in the Department of Psychology at the University of Maryland at College Park (http://shackmanlab.org/). The focus of this position will be to on several projects aimed at understanding the neurobiology of fear and anxiety and its role in the development and maintenance of anxiety disorders, depression, and substance abuse. We are particularly excited about candidates with a strong background in fMRI methods or other kinds of computationally intensive signal processing (e.g. machine learning), but will also consider those with expertise in other areas of affective/cognitive neuroscience or data science/scientific programming. We want someone who is comfortable teaching themselves new techniques and who can jump right into doing science, so decent-or-better coding and statistical skills are mandatory. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in a relevant field and excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. Applicants should send a cover letter or portfolio describing relevant skills, experience, and interests—please provide concrete details about your technical contributions to past projects.
