The Division of Biomedical Informatics at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) and University of Cincinnati (UC) is inviting candidates to join the research team. PhD position and Post-doc position: Privacy-respecting dialog systems

(Computational Linguistics, Computer Science or similar)

Conversational interfaces based on deep learning are becoming more and more ubiquitous. However, the massive amounts of stored speech and text data that is needed for training state-of-the-art models raises serious privacy concerns for its users. Each spoken message may potentially reveal information about the user's personality, may contain critical information (credit card numbers, passwords, etc.), and may convey sensitive information (ethnicity, age, health status, etc.). Voice recordings may even be malevolently used to build synthesized voiced to impersonate users.

The Spoken Language Systems group at Saarland University is seeking new ways to provide dialog technology that is "private by design" by means such as e.g. privacy-preserving machine learning. To this end, we are anticipating the availability of a PhD position and a Post-Doc position starting at the beginning of 2019.

Ideal candidates for either position would have:
1. A good understanding of not just NLP, but of dialog phenomena in particular. Here, an understanding of how privacy-relevant information may arise as a result of dialog behavior (rather than as part of a single utterance) is desirable.
2. Excellent knowledge of machine learning, experience with weakly-supervised methods a plus.
3. Knowledge of and experience with scientific evaluation methodologies.
4. Excellent programming skills, experience with RESTful APIs a plus.
5. Experience with architecting large, heterogeneous, modular and distributed systems.
Salaries: The PhD position will be 75% of full time on the German E13 scale (TV-L). The Post-Doc position will be 100% of the full time on the German E13 scale (TV-L). The appointments will be for three years with possible extensions subject to follow-up funding.

About the department: The department of Language Science and Technology is one of the leading departments in the speech and language area in Europe. The flagship project at the moment is the CRC on Information Density and Linguistic Encoding. Furthermore, the department is involved in the cluster of excellence Multimodal Computing and Interaction. It also runs a significant number of European and nationally funded projects. In total it has seven faculty and around 50 postdoctoral researchers an PhD students.

Postdoctoral Researcher in water quality modelling



The position is part of a project that investigates the feasibility of quantifying reductions of pesticide pollution in Swiss streams triggered by the National Pesticide Action Plan. Specifically, it investigates how well temporal trends in pesticide concentration data series from established monitoring programs can be detected and modeled.



The project is led by Dr Christian Stamm (Uchem) in close collaboration with the other research partners of Siam (Dr Fabrizio Fenicia, Ruth Scheidegger) and the VSA Platform Water Quality (Tobias Doppler). The starting date is 1 January 2019 and the project duration will be 2.5 years.



We are looking for candidates with a solid background in hydrological/water quality modelling and experience in uncertainty analysis. Experiences with diffuse pollution from agricultural sources is an asset. Knowledge of German or French are an advantage but not necessary.

Research Associate in «In Vivo Electrophysiology»

The Roche Innovation Center Basel is leading in the research and development of therapies for brain disorders, with a focus on the fields of neurodegeneration and neurodevelopment. We are looking for a Research Associate to join the Neuroscience Discovery group and contribute to our in vivo electrophysiology work. The successful candidate will join a team responsible for setting up and characterizing new in vivo models to assess efficacy and mechanism of action of neuroscience therapies. The job responsibilities include performing stereotaxic surgery in rodents, behavioral assays, immunohistochemistry, imaging, and data analysis.


In this position you will be responsible for:
• Set up of new in vivo electrophysiology rodent models (transgenic, optogenetic and pharmacological models)
• Characterize in vivo electrophysiology mouse models based on qEEG, event-related potentials, and behavior
• Generate and apply novel recording techniques based on human paradigms.
• Record high-quality data following detailed protocols
• Interact with other research associates and coordinate the logistics of in vivo experiments
• Present results of studies or technical data to group meetings
• Maintain and ensure safe laboratory environment and work practices
• Maintain laboratory records and notebook, organize and compile data, and write reports on results

Qualifications:

Applicants must have a B.S, or M.S. in Life Sciences, Biomedical Engineering or a related discipline. At least one year of in vivo electrophysiology experience is recommended. The applicants should possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Prior laboratory experience with stereotaxic-aided microsurgery, dissection and organ retrieval, perfusion, electrophysiology and histological processing is preferred. Applicants should convey robust analytical skills, a strong record of achievement, and demonstrated ability in effectively working in teams.


Degree in biological sciences (Ph.D. not required) and at least 2-5 years of working on preclinical in vivo modeling with preference in neuroscience.
• Sound knowledge of basic rodent handling techniques
• Experience in craniotomy surgical techniques
• Previous experience with transgenic mouse models of neurodegenerative diseases is a plus
• Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
• High degree of self-motivation, flexibility and the ability to independently conduct experiments

The perception of emotions in autism and social anxiety disorder

Emotion processing deficits have been reported in different disorders and are reflected in disturbed emotion regulation, attentional biases, gaze avoidance, disrupted mimicry and emotion recognition deficits. However, the posed, full-blown facial expressions commonly used in emotion research do not always reflect true feelings, which is particularly confusing for patients. People express emotions through emotional signals and cues. Signals are subject to intentional control: an example is smiling, communicating affiliation, tenderness and affection, or, depending on the context, subordinance. Emotional cues lack the same degree of intentional control or awareness. For instance, pupil dilation, tears and blushing are genuine and hard to enact or fake. Although they are principally beneficial to the expressor, they do provide meaningful information to observers and reflect significant states such as arousal, attention, interest and emotion. The question of how patients with SAD and ASD perceive emotional cues, visible in the face or from body language, has not been investigated yet. Due to the high prevalence of such cues in daily life interactions, it is of crucial importance to investigate whether their known deficits in perceiving emotional signals translate to the more subtle emotional cues that are beyond the control of the expressor.
This project is supported by an NWO VIDI grant to Mariska Kret. The project will run in parallel with ongoing projects in the CoPAN lab, directed by Dr Mariska Kret. The research group participates in the Leiden Institute for Brain and Cognition (LIBC), an interfaculty center for interdisciplinary research on brain and cognition. Patients will at least partly be tested in Germany so the candidate is expected to travel or even temporarily move to Germany for a couple of months per year.

The PoLiMeR consortium (Polymers in the Liver: Metabolism and Regulation) has identified the inherited, liver-related diseases of glycogen and lipid metabolism as the ideal starting point for innovative research training in personalised ‘Systems Medicine’. These diseases are life-threatening for children. Since each specific disease is rare, research efforts are diluted. Developing quality category fatigue design S-N curves for AM materials
Course Description
Background

Fatigue is often the main consideration in design to avoid failure. Although AM is very attractive in many applications, the existing fatigue design curves cannot be used and currently there is a lack of fatigue design guidance for AM components which is largely due to the characteristics of AM materials and their anomalous fatigue behaviour such as anisotropic microstructure, manufacturing method dependent fatigue performance, inherent manufacturing defects of various types, large data scatter. This impairs the use of AM materials in some applications, especially in the areas where severe cyclic loading is expected. Therefore, there is a strong industrial need to standardise fatigue design for AM components.

Project Outline

The objective of this study is to develop appropriate procedures towards standardising fatigue design guidance for AM components

The approach will be similar to the quality category given in BS 7910. A literature review will be conducted to collect experimental data which will be analysed using fracture mechanics approach. Many variables will be investigated when grouping the data for assessment such as materials, processing method, defect types (such as gas porosity, lack of fusion, inclusions and micro-cracking), defect location (surface or embedded), defect size and orientation etc. Probability of detection will also be considered in the analysis. A component may be divided into several discrete zones in the context of manufacturing, design and qualification

Although most fatigue data will be collected from literature review, fatigue crack growth rate tests will be performed to verify the guidance proposed from the study. The outcome of the study will provide a series of S-N curves, each corresponding to a quality category, for fatigue design of AM components.
