We have received significant investment from the Royal Academy of Engineering, Canon Medical Research Europe and the University of Edinburgh to develop new algorithms for learning models that can diagnose and predict disease integrating imaging and non-imaging data.

The initial task of the research fellow will be to contribute to ongoing research projects at the division with a focus on social science perspectives on energy systems, digitalisation and urban low-carbon transitions as well as the role of households in smart grids and smart energy systems. Our group leverages a new kind of computing hardware, so called neuromorphic systems, to translate processes from the brain into algorithms for efficient computing. We take inspiration from neuroscience to develop massively parallel, event-based, and power-efficient algorithms for machine learning, inference and control.
Possible project topics include:
* Bio-inspired signal processing and pattern recognition for chemical sensing,

* Deep learning for fragrance and aroma discovery,
* Computing on neuromorphic hardware.

The Applied Face Cognition Lab (Department of Psychology, University of Fribourg, Switzerland) studies individual differences in human face processing at various levels of processing using multiple techniques. Collaborating with different international police agencies to bridge the gap between the lab and real world, the lab’s aim is to advance our understanding of the mechanisms underlying superior face processing abilities.
Skilled and motivated individuals with overlapping research interests and relevant experience (background in neuroscience, psychology, biomedical science, computer science, or related area) are encouraged to apply to join the lab. In addition to a genuine interest in vision and cognitive neuroscience, the ideal candidate has skills in programming and data analysis, and a high level of written and spoken English. Experience with psychophysics and/or neuroimaging, and strong quantitative skills are a plus. Successful applicants are curious, solution-oriented and collegial, and will develop and conduct studies in the field of translational cognitive neuroscience.

Direct Doctorate Fellowship in Yeast Molecular Genetics
A Direct Doctorate (PhD) scholarship funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) is available at the Bioenergy Research Institute (IPBEN) affiliated with Rio Claro Biosciences Institute of São Paulo State University (IBRC-UNESP) under the mentoring of Dr. Ana Paula Jacobus (www.yeastevolution.com).
The selected candidate will develope research in the context of the Young Researcher project “Collaboration Network: Modern Genetic Approaches to Enhance Yeast Tolerance to Enriched Lignocellulosic Hydrolysates”. This project raises the question of how tolerance to lignocellulosic hydrolysate inhibitors used in the production of second generation ethanol, can be improved in yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae by the use of modern tools of molecular genetics and synthetic biology.
To address this important issue, we established a collaborative axis between the groups belonging to the Bioenergy Research Institute (IPBEN, UNESP), the Brazilian Laboratory of Ethanol Science and Technology (CTBE), University of São Paulo USP) and the University of Queensland, Australia. Experimental approaches such as alternative protocols for adaptive laboratory evolution, mapping of quantitative traits, new generation sequencing, flow cytometry assisted competition and phenotyping tests will be used to discover the genetic basis of yeast tolerance to the hydrolysate rich in inhibitors (LCH) of sugarcane bagasse. Thus, using modern molecular genetic tools and the CRISPR / Cas9 genome editing technology, a yeast strain resistant to the toxicity of the lignocellulosic hydrolysates will be constructed and suitable for the production of cellulosic ethanol.
Requirements
The candidate for the Direct Doctorate position must have, or be finishing, graduation in areas related to biology, microbiology, genetics or biochemistry. In compliance with the rules of FAPESP (http://www.fapesp.br/278#6), the candidate must have a graduation recently completed and within the normal term, with an excellent academic record and, preferably, successful stage of Scientific Initiation. To meet the goals of the Dutch climate agreement the industry will need to greatly reduce their greenhouse emissions. One way of doing this is by reducing the energy requirements for the different industrial processes. Of these processes, the drying process is especially energy intensive. A method that is often used in the food industry is spray-drying. This is a method where the fluid is sprayed through hot air in order for it to dry. It is used to turn, for example, fluid milk products into functional powders. By developing a fundamental understanding of the complex fluid dynamics inside the nozzle as well as in the liquid sheet breakup, the EEMS project aims to formulate recommendations for design and operational principles to optimise the spray drying process. "EEMS”, which stands for Energy Efficient Milky Sprays, is a collaboration of the Institute for Sustainable Process Technology, Friesland Campina, Danone/Nutricia, DSM and TU/e. Together they will study the effects of high solids content and of the main constituent components of model liquids on atomization efficiency of the nozzle. Ultimately this will lead to recommendations for design and operational principles to optimise the spray drying process.

The Max Planck School Matter to Life, one of three pilot schools, is coordinated at the institute as well.
Two Ph.D. positions and a PostDoc position are available in the group of Dr. Thomas Barends at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg. The positions are funded by the European Research Council.
Successful applicants will join an international, interdisciplinary team to work on the elucidation of the biosynthesis pathway of ladderane lipids. Ladderanes are highly unusual hydrocarbon moieties with linearly concatenated cyclobutane rings, found in the membranes of bacteria performing anaerobic ammonium oxidation (“anammox”).
How these complicated molecules are produced is unknown: How do the enzymes involved assemble such intricate carbon skeletons? How do they control the complex stereochemistry involved? How do they overcome the ring strain inherent in these molecules? The successful candidates will be answering these questions using an array of methods including biochemistry, chemical biology, metabolomics and structural biology.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree (a Ph.D. degree for the PostDoc position) or equivalent in chemistry, biochemistry or biology and enjoy practical lab work. The available topics are diverse but include iron-sulfur cluster proteins and lipidomics, so candidates with experience in these fields are particularly invited to apply.
