The Institute of Molecular Biology gGmbH (IMB) is a Centre of Excellence for Life Sciences, funded by the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation. It is located within the campus of the Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz, Germany. The Niehrs laboratory studies regulation of DNA methylation, which plays important roles in development & disease. We have recently demonstrated a role for long non-coding RNAs and R-loop DNA:RNA hybrids in DNA methylation (Arab et al. 2014, Mol Cell, (2014) 55: 604-614). In an ERC-funded project, we now aim to elucidate the mechanisms of DNA demethylation as well as the role played by long non-coding RNAs and R-loops in its regulation. We will use CRISPR/CAS9 mediated ESC mutants, as well as ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, bisulfite-seq to carry out multi- dimensional data analysis to address: Where in the genome does demethylation occur? What are the molecular determinants in ncRNA & Rloops involved in targeting? What are the cofactors involved? The project will involve strong interaction between the Molecular- and the Computational Biologist.

Fellowships are only tenable at U.S. and Canadian Universities.
The Award
The award consists of a two-year fellowship of $29,500 per year for two years (total of $59,000) to be used for the Fellow's academic year and summer stipend. Funding for year 2 is not evaluated competitively, but is contingent upon satisfactory progress in year 1.

Charges not considered legitimate (as examples) include: tuition, summer salary or other compensation for the research director, pooled or overhead costs, and salary for support staff (e.g., secretarial or clerical help). It is expected that the Fellow's institution will waive or assume tuition charges, and that the Fellow will be enrolled on a full-time basis for the duration of this award. Second year support is contingent upon a letter of endorsement signed by the Fellow's research advisor and departmental chair to be received by March 15 of the first year of the fellowship. Fellows will be required to prepare a formal report describing their activities due by September 1 following the expiration of the fellowship.

Job assignments

The core research question of the SeMI project is “How to construct self‑monitoring systems that use joint-human machine learning to adapt to specific domains, by taking advantage of groups of peers, and ubiquitous streams of data?” In order to answer this question we propose to develop a general meta-framework that can, based on domain-specific input, create tools for group-based self-monitoring for that particular domain. This meta-framework should be capable of learning from streams of data and detecting deviations in an unsupervised fashion, but interactively exploit available expert knowledge in a joint human-machine learning fashion. The unprecedented amount of data accessible today allows ML to focus on more descriptive and explanatory analysis. Users no longer pose well-formulated, concrete questions, but instead require the system to be capable of highlighting interesting aspects such as deviations, anomalies, relations and co-occurrences. We will support continuous learning model, where the training and usage are not easily separated, and the system improves its performance all the time, taking advantage of new data as it arrives.

For a collaboration between Ruhr-University Bochum (Germany) and Donders Institute in Nijmegen (the Netherlands), we invite applications for a three-year postdoctoral fellow position. Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow in Primary Care and Population Sciences

In this position you will be part of a team working on a research programme entitled: “Improving adult health in sub-Saharan Africa through couples-focused interventions for HIV, STIs and diabetes.” The team includes Prof. Lucy Yardley (University of Southampton and University of Bristol) and Prof. Sally Wyke (University of Glasgow). Specifically, you will lead on intervention design using logic models and following the Person-Based Approach to intervention development, undertake comprehensive reviews of the literature, conduct qualitative analyses and liaise regularly with South African partners regarding primary data collection.

You will need to be able to work overseas in rural South Africa for visits of approximately 3 weeks, 2-3 times per year, as part of managing project-related activities with the South African teams engaged in primary data collection. The successful candidate will hold a national passport of a country that is exempt from visas for visits to South Africa of up to 90 days per annum (see here). A full driving licence is highly desirable.

The overall programme aims to explore the value of couples-focused behaviour change strategies for health intervention research and practice in sub-Saharan Africa and is run in partnership between the University of Southampton and two South African institutions: Human Sciences Research Council and University of Cape Town. The position is based at Southampton General Hospital within the Public Health Group in the School of Primary Care and Population Sciences, and is funded by a Global Health Professorship award from the National Institute of Health Research.

You will have a PhD in health psychology or a closely related social science discipline that has included training in health behaviour change. You can demonstrate experience of conducting primary data collection including individual interviews and focus groups, and qualitative analysis. You will possess excellent organisational, communication and computing skills, and must have experience of effectively working as part of a team. Experience of working in intervention development with the behaviour change wheel and / or Person-Based approach is highly desirable.

Postdoctoral Researcher in Mathematical Demography at the University of Amsterdam

A postdoctoral researcher position is available with Prof Hal Caswell, in the Theoretical Ecology Research Group, which is part of the Department of Theoretical and Computational Ecology within the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The Theoretical Ecology Group currently comprises 2 professors, one assistant professor, 1 post-doc, and 4 PhD students. It has active research programs in structured population modelling, resource-consumer interactions, epidemiology, demography, and evolutionary and eco-evolutionary theory.

This postdoctoral position is part of the research program The Formal Demography of Kinship and Family (FORMKIN), which is funded by a European Research Council Advanced Grant to Prof Hal Caswell. The overall goal of FORMKIN is to develop and apply a matrix analytic model for kinship demography, which will compute the kinship network implied by schedules of mortality and fertility. It will develop this theory at the levels of the individual, the cohort, and the population. The models will be applied to comparisons of countries, regions, socioeconomic groups, and historical periods.

Postdoc position in Applied Machine Learning at Frederick Research Center, Cyprus

The Frederick Research Center invites applications for one (1) postdoctoral position within the research topics of machine learning applied to web & mobile computing challenges. This position is part of the project “EnterCY: Enhancing Tourist Experience in Cyprus” funded by the national Research Promotion Foundation (RPF).

The EnterCY project aims at developing an integrated web and mobile platform for enhancing the experience of tourists in Cyprus by utilizing cutting-edge technologies including machine learning, virtual and augmented reality, big data management and mobile computing. Its consortium is composed of nine (9) partners from different sectors (i.e., academia, government, industry and tourism-related associations).

The successful applicant will perform research on intelligent data analysis and the development of machine learning techniques for applied problems in the area of web and mobile computing, under the supervision of Dr. Harris Papadopoulos (http://staff.frederick.ac.cy/com.ph/) and Dr. Andreas Konstantinidis (http://mdl.frederick.ac.cy/Profile/akonst/). As part of this multi-disciplinary project, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to closely collaborate with researchers from a multitude of ICT-related domains, as well as various other domains including cultural heritage, tourism, cognitive psychology, 3D modeling and virtualization.

This is a three (3) year postdoc position (renewable) starting around January 2019 with an entry-level salary of 1800-2500 EUR depending on experience and qualifications.
