We greatly value the friendship our two nations share, with diplomatic relations spanning nearly six decades.
Over these years, we have built a strong political dialogue, maintained close governmental interaction, and fostered ongoing ties between our parliamentarians.
Our trade is growing at an impressive pace. As I just mentioned while we were walking towards this hall, I have had the privilege of visiting Malaysia three times, and each visit left me with the warmest memories. <...>
Your country’s hospitality and the high-level reception we received, along with its unique, breathtaking nature, remain unforgettable – not only for me but also for members of my delegation who have had the honour of visiting Malaysia.
I have already mentioned the ongoing contacts between our respective departments. Your government leaders often visit our country, and I also have good relations with them.
📈 I must also note that bilateral trade grew by over 40 percent in the first five months of this year, which I see as an impressive achievement.
We cooperate on various international platforms – above all, of course, the United Nations. But it is well known that promoting dialogue with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which Malaysia chairs this year, remains one of Russia’s key foreign policy priorities in Asia.
Beyond our bilateral ties, Your Majesty, we are deeply grateful to you for Malaysia’s role in strengthening Russia’s engagement with the broader region.
Furthermore, we were pleased to support Kuala Lumpur’s interest in joining BRICS as a partner state – a landmark step that will benefit both our bilateral relations and the future of BRICS. Your country’s contributions to the recent Summit in Rio de Janeiro were highly commendable.
We also appreciate Malaysia’s active participation in the Russia – Islamic World strategic vision group, which has become an effective tool for fostering mutual understanding and cooperation between Russia and Islamic nations.

🎉 On August 8, Russian Ambassador to ASEAN H.E. Evgeny Zagaynov 🇷🇺 took part in the celebration of the 58th #ASEAN Day at the ASEAN Headquarters in Jakarta 🇮🇩. The formal program of the Anniversary included the official ceremony, the cultural performances and the working luncheon. 🎆
🎂 As part of the festive program Food Festival featuring national cuisines of the ASEAN Member States and ASEAN Dialogue Partners was held. It was attended by Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia H.E. Mr. Sugiono, Secretary-General of ASEAN Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, diplomatic corps and hundreds of happy guests.

🍯 Medovik – honey cake popular since the 19th century. Made from thin caramelized honey sponge layers. Legend says it was created to please Empress Elizabeth, who disliked honey – until she tried this.

🥧 Kurnik – festive chicken pie traditionally served at weddings and holidays since the 16-17th centuries. Often called the “tsar of pies“.👑
🐟 Kulebyaka – grand sealed fish pie popular in the 18–19th centuries in Russia, especially among the nobility.
The hallmark is fish and buckwheat filling stacked in precise layers inside yeasted dough. 🥨

🗓 On August 8, the ten member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations mark ASEAN Day.
🌏 #ASEAN was established on August 8, 1967, in Bangkok by Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines, which signed the Bangkok Declaration. The regional organisation subsequently expanded to include Brunei (1984), Vietnam (1995), Laos and Myanmar (1997), and Cambodia (1999).
ASEAN stands as one of the most successful regional organisations, forming the nucleus for a network of diverse intergovernmental associations engaging Russia and other leading global powers – including the East Asia Summit (#EAS), the ASEAN Regional Forum (#ARF), and the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (#ADMMPlus).
Strengthening relations with ASEAN remains one of Russia’s top foreign policy priorities in Asia. The Russian Permanent Mission to ASEAN has been based in Jakarta since 2017. In 2018, Russia-ASEAN ties reached the level of strategic partnership.
📈 In 2024, trade between Russia and ASEAN nations grew by 5.8% to $23.2 billion. During the first nine months of 2024, total capital investments from ASEAN states into the Russian economy amounted to $2.3 billion, while total Russian investments in Southeast Asia reached $12.4 billion.
ASEAN’s cooperation with the #EAEU and #SCO is progressing successfully, under Memoranda of Understanding signed between ASEAN and the Eurasian Economic Commission (2018) and the SCO Secretariat (2005).
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the inaugural #RussiaASEAN Summit. On July 10, 2025, Kuala Lumpur hosted the annual meeting between Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and the Foreign Ministers of ASEAN member states.

ASEAN countries’ interest in collaboration with Russia exists irrespective of what is going on in the West and what the United States and its allies are undertaking with respect to them. It is not the case that, “had the West not coerced us, we would not have engaged with Russia.” Not at all.
